Mobile 1???

I realize that mobile 1 is not cummins approved but I put it into my truck on the basis that it says for gasoline and diesel engines on the back of the bottle.

I've since driven about 2000 miles and my truck seems to have gotten a bit of a rattle at certain RPMs. This might be the valves telling me they want to be set or it could be my Cumins saying it want's other oil.

The oil has allready turned brown whereas the oil Dino oil stayed clean until I changed it with over 4000 miles on it.

I'm thinking about draining the mobile and putting in some Rotella as I can't afford to spring for the Delvac.

Suggestions???

You ought to get that Mobil 1 out of there ASAP. It is rated for passenger car diesels, not for medium duty truck engines. The biggest differences between Mobil 1 and a CH-4 rated diesel oil is the lack of enhanced soot holding capacity in the automotive oil. It also hasn't been qualified for the Cummins and Cat diesel engine test series, so you are on your own as wear protection and ring deposit formation with these engines. You probably haven't done any real damage over a couple thousand miles, but Mobil 1 will not hold up much longer than that in a Cummins.

I would recommend the new Delo 400 iso-syn if you don't want to spring for synthetic oil. It has a new base oil formulation that makes it stand out among the conventional diesel oils. I've gotten really good oil analysis results using the new stuff. It still costs about the same as the older stuff and Rotella, etc.

Uncle Billy, I just noticed that you were from Calgary. You ought to try Petro Canada Duron. It is a Group III basestock oil which is almost as good as a true synthetic. They make a couple of different grades that you could run year round. It should cost you less than Mobil 1 and a whole lot less than Delvac.
