I ordered my truck on 3/23. It's build date was 4/21. The dealer tells me its an 04 not an 04. 5. I went to buy a filter kit from Geno's which is when I started to wonder if any part numbers change from 04 to 04. 5 and which one I'm getting.

If it was built on 3/23/2004, it's an 04. 5 (325/600). The 04's (305/555) don't meet the new 2004 emission standards.



As far as I know, both engines use the same filters.

Members of the TDR or DTR refer these changed mid-season as XX. 5. This happened in 98, with the 12 valve going to a 24 valve, '01 when the drum rears were replaced with disc brakes, and now '04 with the additional HP/torque and catalytic converter.

We really confuse them with our jargon, but in the real world, the dealerships only see these as 98's, 01's and 04"s.

We have such a keen eye for the minor changes that we differentiate them with XX. 5 to keep them straight.

I think if you look at the window sticker or door label, that the 2004. 5's are still called 2004.

My truck was built late 2003 and realeased early 2004 in California as a low output 235 HP. . I am told the emmission standards were incresed by EPA at this time. . The 2004. 5 addressed this and released all H. O. models to be all states certified, including califs.



I am also told by some that I have an EGR set up which was only installed for trucks released in 1st half of 2004. . This would exolain why my oil gets dirty black in less than 2000 miles consistantly. .



The owners manual also recommends changing this early 2004 model oil every 3500 vs 7000 for others. . This would also make since if it had EGR which would cause dirty oil and sooting sooner. .



However! I had a couple folks who work for Cummins tell me that no 2003 or 2004 trucks have EGR. . Then why would the manual indicate oil changes so soon on these and I get blak oil at 1500 miles?????????

Martin oil changes and emmisions are related so to obtain the proper emissions they want you to change the oil more often. The EGR I would check under the hood for any extra plumbing in the exhaust system or right near the exhaust port of the head ( Iwould doubt Cummins would make a different head just for CA models tho)
