I bought and modified a new Severe Duty Filtration Kit to use commercially available filters. The SDFK price had dropped to just over $100, so I probably have $250 invested in kit and the mods. I basically found a filter head similar to what originally came in the kit, and it includes the heater that plugs into the SDFK harness. Now I'll use Fleetguard FS19732 or equivalent, not the Mopar part.

I have an 03 with a Raptor pump. Where does the SD filter mount? I would really like to have one and would be willing to move my pump to make it fit. Also, how does the wiring work?

The filter bracket mounts to the inside of the left frame just forward of the fuel tank, right to the left side of the back of the transfer case. There are two "ears" which serve as the upper mount points for the filter bracket and one hole in the frame that the lower mounting bolt fits into. The wiring performs two functions - it provides for the water in fuel sensor option of the new filter, so you end up with two WIF sensors. Your original WIF sensor in the original fuel filter is replaced with a new one, then the harness attaches to the new sensor in your original filter as well as the SDFK filter. The second function is providing a fuel heater. The harness provides a relay that mounts near the battery along with power connections you attach to the battery (positive wire is fused), and the power connector plugs into the new filter housing down under your truck.

I ran a truck for 4 years with a filter on the suction side of an under truck filter and never had any trouble with gelling or plugging down to -10F, but I was probably lucky and wasn't exposed to biodiesel like we are now.

The instructions indicate short box trucks need to drop the tank but I'm not going that route. I'm tapping into the original supply line just forward of the SD filter mounting location and using an assortment of Push Lock and JIC fittings to supply flow to the new filter as well as the OEM filter. I'd upload the instructions but the file is huge and I'm sure I've seen it here before - it's #K6855569AC.

severe duty fuel filter

Does anyone know about the reasons the SD filter does not fit the 03 @04 trucks? the injectors are the same and should have the best filter posable. Is the fact thr fuel pump in the way?
As we know the pump can and is, moverd

My guess is reason for the '03 and '04 exclusion is that on the '03 and '04 trucks originally had the lift pump mounted on the engine mounted fuel filter assembly and would be sucking fuel through the SDFK. The later trucks are equipped with an in-tank lift pump which is pushing fuel through the filter. I've been thinking of adding that filter kit to my '03 truck since it was upgraded with the in-tank lift pump years ago.
