Modified VE Pump

My pump is shot so I've been looking for a replacement and noticed there are "modified" pumps available. I was considering buying one but was scared-off when they told me they wouldn't warranty it; are they all like that? I can get a 1-year warranty on a new, stock pump but $1,400 is a lot of money to spend on potential junk. So, I have to ask all you smart guys why wouldn’t a company stand behind its product? My manual tells me to R&R but from all the info here I might be able to fix it. Is there a rebuild kit out there for the ve pump? I figure if I’m carrying the warranty I may as well do the work.

Because of all the close tolerances inside the pump, it is better to let a certified pump shop take care of the internal stuff. Even if you could completely rebuild the pump at home it would still need to be run on a calibration stand. Yes there are some things you can take care of yourself. Some companies don't give much warranty because they can't control how their product will be used.

New pumps are warranted by Bosch. If the pump is not "altered" then Bosch will stand behind those pumps, but, if the pump is altered in any significant way then the vendor cannot return the pump to Bosch for warranty due to those alterations.

Normally when we start to tinker with these things we assume the liability/reponsibility for the potential results such as early failure or breakage.

It's the cost of "playing" I guess you could say... .



You can ususally expect to have good results from a pump if you chose to tweak it, or, have it tweaked by a shop prior to shipment.

The "usual" mods are being run/used in most of the pumps we are running on our trucks today/here... .

Those mods are things that you can usually find here on the site and do yourself if you choose. Personally I like the idea of doing most of those things myself because it helps in the learning/understanding of how they operate and what the results are of a mod I have done myself.

As far as I know there are no "Kits" available for rebuilding because they process requires putting the pump on a stand and going thru a significant number of checks and tests (I have seen the amount of testing) to confirm that the rebuild is "within spec" for the pump. This makes it pretty hard/almost impossible for the average owner to do the rebuild personally.

Taking all that into account you can expect to have a good pump on which to base your mods if you start with a new pump... . again, you'll go into that knowing at the outset that you are pretty much voiding any mfg warranty when you start the mods.

You'll need to give your local Bosch Authorized shop the pumps serial located there on the side of said pump. Then get the rebild manual and go to town on that sucker.



The only probem is;



Should you get one thing outta alignment, the time you just spent to R&R the pump AND rebild it is wasted if the engine either will not start or runs away on you.



The pump shops tests the pump on a bech and operates it at all sorts of RPM's and test/check all aspecs of the pump.



The shops will often modify a pump but charge you out the nose for this "specialty work" cause it's the R&D that cost them the $



There are other options for you. Get a rebuilt pump and send the rebuilt/certified pump off to someone who will modify it for you.

If your pump is not too badly damaged internally you should be able to find a Bosch authorized shop that will rebuild it for $400 to $700 depending on how many new parts it needs.



If you want performance and a warranty give the guys the $1400 dollars they are asking and you won't be dissappointed.



If you want a specialty pump find a pump builder that will do what you want, give him what he wants to do it, and remember "I am my own warranty station".





The P-pump and VP guys would jump at the chance to have as many cost effective choices we have with our trucks.
