Competition modifying stock intercooler???

I have two stock intercoolers laying around and was thinking if this idea would work. Cut off both the end tanks, sandwich the two cores together, tig them together, then fab up new end tanks. Has anybody ever thought of this before? The intercooler would then be 4. 5 in thick, but will fit with some fabricating.

The Cummins Recon Ram had this setup. They got the record at Bonneville around 1996 at 141 mph. One of the first B. o. m. b. ed second generation Rams
