Senility, or Alzheimers?

anyone in/near the Shawnee, KS area

I am renting a house right now. About 6 months ago we had a water leak inside the house with water everywhere. It was the sink drain in the kitchen. Every since then Me and my wife have felt really lazy. MORE THAN NORMAL! So I was looking around under the sink adn seen some black stuff growing on the sheet rock. So I know it is mold. The stud doesn't show a whole lot of it, and really the sheet rock doesn't either but it is there. So I started looking around for it and noticed some on the ceiling of my shower. Who looks up that much in the shower? Also, I really noticed that when we took a vacation, I didn't have any sinus troubles, and The first 2 hours at home I started having them again. I got a 15 month old at home, so I am a little scared. I have lived in this house for about 5 years now. WHAT DO I DO? I want to get my facts in a line before I go talk to my landlord. Thanks to all who can help...

Mold has to have a water source to continue. Find it first. Next you need to get a bleach solution, or a vinegar solution, and apply it every few days. You may need to open the wall and or ceiling.

Does the house have brick on it? The mortar may be too close to the wall and allowing water to wick over. Put a sealer on the brick.

I am involved in a couple of houses here in the springfield area that are fighting mold.

A good investigation of the roof and brick will usually find it.

I own an appartment that has two area's of mold. We think a worker of a sub-contractor relieved himself in these two corners. It has been an issue of slowing it but we have not been able to stop it. We are next going to open the wall.

Put fans every where and circulate the air.

Black mold is bad VERY BAD. My in-laws had a waterline break in their house and got black mold. They had to abandon the house and move into a trailer. One kid was getting migraines and the father devoloped athsma (sp) and has to use a nebulizer breathing machine now. Condensation will cause it too. Dad has that problem at his house, its sealed up too tight.

For your familys health, please get this taken care of. This stuff is toxic.

Wow, now I know what I can tell my wife - Hon, I think its mold. :-laf

Since it is not your house it sounds like it is definately time to either have the landlord fix it or start looking for new digs. I've heard it very difficult to fix.

The house sits on a concrete slab. The water lines are underneath the concrete. And the house ALWAYS shows moisture on the windows in the winter. I've also been told that you can't get rid of it unless you tear it out. Is this true?

Our fire station was condemned due to black mold. The problem was due to poor workmanship and covering the weep holes with dirt and poor drainage.

I was told from day one it was a "sick building" and everyone, to some degree, had increased sinus problems and sickness. A transfer to the other station fixed it.

I was pulling CAT5 above the ceiling one day and was amazed to have an almost instant headache and bad sore throat. I do fire alarm on off days so being above the ceiling is nothing new.

I would just be doing something and feel a tick in my nose and it would began bleeding, usually the day I got off of shift.

They got ready to do a remodel and had to check for mold and we were moved into a trailer (2000) for three years until the station was rebuilt. (long story)

The nose bleeds stopped soon after. It apparently made me even more sensitive to molds as I seem to have more trouble when the outdoor mold counts go up. Whether that is coincidence or getting older is unknown.

I would get out if I were you.

I have a home in Northern California that I am constantly having mold problems in. Everything in the house has had to be replaced. It was all caused by extremely poor quality of construction of the house. If I had to pay someone to fix it, the cost would have been less to just tear it down and rebuild the house. My insurance company cancelled my policy on the house, ad blacklisted me on their CLUE reports, which means insurance now costs me 5 times as much.

My advice would be to get out. The health problems you could have are not worth it. If I had to do it all over again, I would have just walked away from the house.
