I removed my CCV (Crank Case Ventilation) filter on my 2004 to see if it was dirty. I discovered there is nothing inside. It's an empty plastic junction box for the CCV system. To me, this is NOT a filter.

I read in issue 75, page 40 where they change this "filter" on the 4th gen trucks.

Is the 4th gen CCV different than the previous units? Do these newer ones have a filter media in them? It does look that way in the pictures

If you have a 3rd gen and it's an empty plastic junction box, all it needs is simply washing it out. Mine had nothing in it. Wasted my time.

Save yourself some time and money!

The CCV on the 6. 7 is integral to the EGR system ... on the 6. 7, the EGR recycles alot more soot into the oil, so the CCV has to be able to deal with it without clogging, and then also needs to be replaced at regular intervals so it does not clog. The 6. 7 CCV filter is MUCH bigger then on the 5. 9, and is also integral to the plastic "valve cover" on those motors.

On the 5. 9 CTD, the CCV simply allow whatever small amount of oil that escapes the block with blowby to drain back into the system. It does NOT need to be serviced or replaced unless the o-ring that seals it to the valve cover is leaking, in which case you can simply replace the o-ring, or remove the complete assembly and replace with a breather line like the older engines had, if that is what you prefer.

Starting with the 6. 7 the vent for CCV goes in the turbo inlet so it cant have any oil in it. The filter is about 2/3 the size of the valve cover han has 2 collalessing filters in it and routes the oil back to the engine. It is not part of the EGR system
