I have wanted a moonroof or sunroof install in my truck since new. I would like to know what kind of information good or bad on installing one. My truck is a quad cab. I do not know if there would be any structual problems. Let me know what you all think. TIA, Sam.

Hi Sam, haven't talked to you in awhile :)

Two sunroof/moonroof installs I have seen are HeberRam's old truck, and Richie (Little diesel's dad with white '01 dually). Steve (HeberRam) had his done in Utah and Richie got his through Dave Smith Motors (not sure who did the work). I thought the installs looked good to me but wouldn't be able to answer the structural questions. Both were dual function moon/sunroof. That's one BOMB I've always wanted to do, if I wouldn't keep changing trucks  But I have the same concerns as you. . . it can't compromise the structural integrity, can't leak or whistle in the wind, and must look top quality ie. factory installed.

Hi Vaughn,

We should be able to see you at Diesel Thunder, this summer. Thanks for the info, I will try and contact these members and see what they have to say. Thanks, Sam. :)

Hey Sam,

The 1995 I bought came with a Starlite VII sunroof from Webasto Sunroofs Inc. The original owner had it installed at Chetty's in Concordville, PA in 1998. I checked their website and they have dealers all over the country. I really like it. It is leak-free and has a very stock appearance. It has a 2-way rocker switch installed in the overhead console that has the temp and maplights. The switch rocks forward for tilt up venting and backward for express open sunroof. It has an auto-close feature so that if you just turn the truck off it will close itself for you or you can hit the switch again if you want it to stay open. I can try and post some pics later if you like.

Here's a couple of pics. Never mind the heaps of pollen. No idea on the price. You can go HERE and find a local dealer. Mine is like the current SolAire Series Inbuilt sunroof.

I realize that reality often conflicts with wants, but I always enjoyed the open view of a convertable. I wish someone would make a clear glass top for pickups, it could have a retractable interior (silver/chrome) cover to keep out excessive sun if needed.

When traveling in the mountains I miss being able to see over the doors and windshield.

Take out as much roof sheet metal as possible, leaving just enough to support the windshield and above the doors. I suspect our trucks could be moded a bit with a roll bar structure to replace the structural interegity that would be lost.

I wouldn't be suprised if you used shatterproof, bullet proof glass, that it would be stronger with glass, than the current sheetmetal.

CStansbury, Thanks for the pictures. I will take these down to the local sunroof shop. I will find out what is offered now and post. Thanks, Sam.

Doc @ Dave Smith talked me out of getting the sunroof thinking I would make it leak with the power I was planning to make. I sure wish I had bought on with it. I may just have to get one aftermarket. . . . .

Huh that's odd . . . with the hydroformed frame I would think it would be a non-issue for sure. The cab on my '03 was way rock solid, especially compared to the '98 and '01 Quad Cabs I owned.
