Just got off the phone with the parts manager from my local 5-star ... he says that 1-qt and 1-gal containers of Mopar-branded (Delvac?) motor oil for our CTDs had been on backorder since the latter part of December. Mopar is just beginning to release the backorders to my 5-star in Pennzoil bottles ... more specifically, Pennzoil "LongLife Gold" 15W40. He says Mopar will eventually distribute this oil with their name on the bottles.

Anyone know any more on this or have any opinions about Pennzoil LongLife Gold for use in the 5. 9 and 6. 7 Cummins?

Oil war thread!!!! HAhahaha :D I worked in a shop about 10 years back and I remember one of the mechanics talking about there being an oil problem with penzoil and how it hurt one of the cars the shop was working on. It left a bad taste in my mouth and I've never touched the stuff since. I used Delo 400 because it is a hydro cracked oil and performs at a near synthetic level but is cheaper than a full synthetic because you can buy it by the pail or gallon at most local heavy truck parts stores.

I think that may have been Castrol Motor Oil not Pennzoil that was mentioned, about the time frame you are talking about I beleive they had a Castrol recall they forgot to put the additive in their 10W40 that made it change back to 10 when it cooled down therefore it was 40 Weight all the time.

But then again I am only guessing the guy could have had a problem with Pennzoil also.

Got 270K on a 94 pulling a load all the time that has had the Pennzoil "Longlife Gold" 15w40 that has worked great for me. The first owner put it in so I wouldnt change. I have put half the miles on it my self. Try to change it between 4 and 5k miles.

Coalsmoke - Oil wars, I love it! For what it's worth, Cummins fills with Valvoline at the factory, but as long as an oil meets API CJ-4 standards then it is acceptable in the 6. 7, whether it is Pennzoil, Valvoline, Mopar, Uncle Tony's, yada yada. That being said, a lot of folks are brand loyal, I personally use Valvoline in everything I have, no idea why but I just always have. But, I love it that TDR is full of gear heads and we can get passionate about motor oil - what a great forum!

The 2 Dodge dealers around me use a Mobil 10W30 in the winter. For those who want a
Cummins approved oil:

Our local Cummins distributor (NPower in the Midwest) has a sale through April:
$50 rebate on 3 cases of Valvoline Premium Blue
$100 rebate on 3 cases of Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme

My dealer showed me some of the new bottles the other day and said it was Mobil 1 oil. It had the same silver bottles used by mobil 1 here.

Well, as we know the CJ oil isn't as good as the CI-+ oil it replaced. I stocked a bunch of the good stuff for my 5. 9's. As far as the CJ stuff is concerned I only worry about whether the oil has the CJ rating. If it does, I run whatever is reasonably priced. I ran Delo for a long time because that's what we've used in our big trucks for years. We got good service from it, but I'm not convinced it's significantly better than Rotella or the other brands.

Well, Cummins "approves" oils besides Valvoline (they just happen to co-brand with Valvoline Premium Blue). Here's from my owner's manual:
"For best performance and maximum protection under all
types of operating conditions, the manufacturer only
recommends engine oils that are API CJ-4 certified and
meet the requirements of Chrysler LLC. Use MOPAR or
an equivalent oil meeting Chrysler Material Standards
MS-10902. Products meeting Cummins CES 20081 may
also be used"

I also assume your 2 Dodge dealers around use that 10W-30 in your gasoline powered vehicles..... that should NEVER be put in a diesel. 10W-40 is recommended for most driving conditions and 5W-40 synthetic is required for low temp operation

My dealer tech just told me that Rotella was bad for the 6. 7. He said I must use Pennzoil or an oil that is labeled for regeneration. Anyone heard that Rotella is unacceptable in the 6. 7?

I've used Rotella in my trucks, farm equipment and construction equipment for years, never a problem. When I went into the dealership, they jumped up and down to tell me I shouldn't be using Rotells. Something about the thing on top of the valve cover and breakdown... . just would stop up the turbo. Just wondered if anyone else had heard this or had thoughts... .

When i was working as a tech at the stealership I never heard that. Were they trying to sell you mopar branded oil? Sounds like a lame marketing technique to me but you could contact Shell with this to find out for sure. I personally use Delo 400, one of the best you can get before full synthetics.

MOPAR now Pennzoil

A couple of months ago Orange Park Dodge changed my oil and they

too said it was PENNZOIL. My engine warranty lacks about 500 miles

being out, I plan to start using either Delo 400 or Valvoline Premium Blue

and change it myself. My original dealer was closed and I don't care for

the two in Jacksonville that remained open, it's hard to return to mediocrity or

less.

Dealers don't like to be questioned about their oil but will answer if you press

them hard enough. It ticks me off that they use MOPAR for the HEMIS

and bulk oil for everything else when they change your oil in the gassers.

Mopar has it's own bulk oil program with many dealers on it, and it's the same oil as comes in the bottle. Ask your dealer if they use Mopar bulk oil, and if they do there should be a sticker on the bulk oil tank(s) identifying the oil as such.

bulk oil

I ask the dealer, or pressed them to tell me where the oil came from

and they said it came from a Shell Refinery and the Jobber here in Jax, Fl.

who delivered it. I had already seen Quaker State, Castrol, Pennzoil,

and Kendall bulk trucks loading out of tank cars at CSX's RR bulk

terminal and I ran a record on all of the tanks and all but one were shipped

from Charleston, S. C. by Shell Oil, the other car I couldn't figure out the

shipper, the name didn't mean anything.

When Jax Chry. Dodge bills you for the oil change, it's for the MOPAR

Filter and 5 qts of oil. If they put MOPAR oil in the vehicle, they show

on the bill MOPAR oil, 5 qts.

The more you get into what the dealer is doing, the more lost you get.

Hmmm

Especially if they put in only 5 Qts & don't pre-fill the filter.

Oh my!!

I'll do my own thank you! Valvoline Extreme is the only oil my baby has ever seen. FG filters as well. 113k & NO issues to date.

If the motor breaks it will be Cummins or a trusted diesel shop that gets the call.

I have been using rotella synthetic after break-in and it sure srarts easier when its cold. I also use in my skid-loaders with good results. Rotella rated very high near the top ,I believe it was just behind premium blue.

Pennzoil Gold

I went into the shop area when the dealer was changing mine and the oil was definitely Pennzoil Gold Long Life in one gallon jugs..... I have been having oil analysis since the first change and everything looks good with the exception of high fuel content in oil (up to 5 %), but you will get that from the regen process with any brand.
