'Mopar" Diesel Oil?

I got my oil changed at a local Dodge-Ford dealer today (Minocqua, WI) and asked them if they used Rotella T (which I understood earlier they had switched to from the Valvoline Blue). They told me they don't use Rotella T anymore and now just switched to Mopar-branded diesel oil in all dealer oil changes on Dodge-Cummins trucks.



Looking for a quick fact check here... any of the smart guys on here know where this "Mopar" oil comes from?

I honestly don't know but I have been using it for the past 4 oil changes. In my overly simplistic view it is probably ok oil since the manufacturer needs to have a good oil for engine warranty.

From a 2012 Star catalog of Mopar Lubricants & Chemicals, there's an implication that the Mopar stuff is coming from Shell. On page 12, the following is stated:

3. Mopar Bulk Oil 100% interest free funding through Shell Lubricants for Express Lane loans up to five years.

Based on Rusty's cut and pasted statement above I would be confident assuming the magical new MOPAR oil is ordinary old Shell Rotella repackaged with a MOPAR lable.

Rotella is a high quality oil and, IIRC, the top of the tested lube oils in a recent TDR article.

Under their Preferred Customer program, I get an oil and filter change for $40 or less, so why should I bother with it? The Mopar oil must be doing fine so far as no oily mechanical bits have made their way through the oil pan or out the side of the block.

That's a great deal! You couldn't buy the oil and filter for that!

A shuttle driver at my now defunct Dodge dealer(Dodge mysteriously shut them down,even with excellent volume) used to be an oil changer at said dealer. I asked him if they pre-filled the oil filter before mounting it. "Well,we were supposed to", he replied.

The importance of this procedure has been debated,but I feel better doing it.

I just do my own or when I had my shoulder surgery,my local independent shop did it.

It is Rotella T triple protection, factory fill, packaged, as well as bulk product.

That's good news to me. Ever since reading the recent TDR article, I switched to Rotella T. Thanks gentlemen.

I also bought an Essential care oil change contract. 6 oil changes that have to be used within 3 years. I have two left and I hope I can get this deal again in the future. I save about $20 an oil change by letting the dealer do it. My dealer uses the 1 gallon Mopar jugs. I assumed it was probably Valvoline but I'm ok with Rotella too.

These are good at any Dodge dealer in the US. Not sure about Canada. I was able to negotiate a better deal with my local dealer but here is an example.

Just keep in mind that Dodge does these oil contracts every 3-5 years. Last I knew the oil was Exxon Mobil and before that it was Valvoline and now it is Shell. Basically whoever wins the bid gets the contract. Bottomline is it is still good oil or Mopar would not sell it.

One last thing, these oil contracts (except for the packaged products) are not necessarily what the dealers are selling you at your oil change. Most dealers buy their "bulk" products locally at what they can get the cheapest. So if your dealer is using bulk oil and it is a concern for you ask them who their distributor is and what oil they are buying.
