I called Richmond Chrysler/Plymouth and asked if their service department installed exhaust brakes on the CTD. The service man asked me what an "exhaust rake" is. I explained what I wanted and he said he'd never heard of it. I asked for the diesel mechanic, then asked him the same question. He said the Mopar exhaust brake is only for manual transmissions because the automatic transmission doesn't need it. Does anyone know if Mopar has an exhaust brake? Before I call another dealer (hopefully smarter) I want to know if the animal exists. I figure if they install it, it won't void the warranty.

Yes there is a brake (the jacobs), however putting it on an auto truck I believe voids the warrenty. A while back there was a "Buy back" on brakes from auto trucks.

Yes, DC sells an exhaust brake, made by Jacobs which I believe is affiliated with Cummins?

Search the archives, there are many posts about this, there was a post about a place back east that had the best price I've seen, about $550 I think.

The exhaust brake is less effective on the autos and can cause problems if not done correctly, you should also find lots of info about this in your search.

Good luck.

I had a simmilar conversation with my local stealer. "never heard of an exhaust brake" after brining the shops dieasel guy in on the conversation the service manager said to call DC and ask them if it would void the warrantee. I decided to call Banks next. The "Banks" sales guy I spoke to said that they worked with Cummins in designing their brakes so they would not void the warantee. The Banks guy then went on to say that if there is a failure caused by the brake and DC wouldn't cover it Banks would. (All a sales pitch) take it for what its worth. If your not your own warantee station then you need to be your own lawyer.

The auto doesn't need it??? (somebody doesn't know what he is talking about) ("may damage your auto" is a more correct answer)

I believe if you read all the old posts, you'll find the consensus is that EVERYBODY who has an exhaust brake loves it. The bad news is, with an auto transmission some upgrading of the transmission (or minor mod??? - help me out, auto guys!) is needed before the brake will work for you without damaging the transmission.

Make sure you're talking about the same thing (engine or trans) - no exhaust brake manufacturer or Cummins makes the auto trans and it was not designed for an exhaust brake. Mopar/Jacobs sell it ONLY for the manual trans and if they could sell it for the auto they would. If anyone claims to pay for a transmission failure - get it in writing before you buy. Good advice to be your own lawyer.

I've had a BD exhaust brake on my 99 automatic for three years . I had to install a BD Autolok to keep the torque converter locked under de-accelleration. Works great with no problems. 118,000 miles on truck. 100,000 with exhaust brake installed. Contact Valley Fuel Injection or BD in Abbotsford, Ca.

The relationship between Jacobs and Cummins is that Clessie Cummins (founder of Cummins engine) designed and patented the original diesel engine brake (not an exhaust brake but similar result) and licensed the patent to Jacobs. This was after Clessie and the Cummins company parted ways.
