Hello,

Yesterday, while at my local Dodge dealer waiting to have some work done on my 2003 truck. I noticed a article in the DCMC published MOPAR MAGAZINE June 2003 edition. http://www.mopar.com/mag_mail.html

page 41. Oil Oder

If you sense a strong oil smell inside the cab, check the crankcase the crankcase breather vapor canister for excessive oil residue. The vapor canister should be emptied at every oil change, as some oil will collect in it during normal service. The oil oder, however, is the result of a seal location problem between the cowl and the hood. An improperly located seal can allow oil vapors to enter the cab. Reference TSB #09-02-00 for details to correct this problem. Also Mopar is looking into offering an oil additive for oder. See your dealer.

Any idea of what series CTD model they are quoting? My local service person could not find it in the Mopar system.

Could they be saying that enough of us 2003 CTD owners have complained about the oder?

In my past, new 2002 CTD 2500 SLT four door. I had the same smell / oder as I have had for the last 5,500 miles in my new 2003 CTD HO truck. I tried the old ten foot rubber hose from the breather tube on the 03 (that fixed the oder on the 02).

I thought between the engine protective coating and the new oil smell would have gone away by now.

With the fine summer Florida weather now getting hotter each month. I have tried the AC controls in all of the settings. With no luck. My engine oil is Valvoline Dino SAE 15W-40. With out starting a Oil >>> Fondue / War. Do you think if I switched to the Valvoline Premium Blue it might cure the Peppie la' Pew Deno smell in the cab?

Thank You all again for your insight. You have helped me every inch of the way with my new truck. From helping me nail down the best deal, picking a new topper to the ongoing things like the noisy clutch disk replacement.

Heck in just fifty four more payments... I will own the thing.

Also if you get a chance look in the July 2003 Mopar magazine page [45] We Get Photos. It shows the tail end of a white tail deer poking though a new (rolled) red Dodge Durango windshield.

2003 3500 SLT CTD SRW LWB HO six speed, black four door, Mopar bed liner. AFE drop in air filter A. R. E. topper. 200 gallons of extra fuel in bed.

1969 Plymouth Road Runner 440 / Dana 60.

1986 Dodge 1500 mule truck with a 1957 392ci Chrysler Hemi engine.

1965 Chrysler Imperial four door 413ci.

1975 Bricklin SV1 351 W ford (sorry).

1985 K100 BMW.

1975 Suzuki GT 750 rice rockets. (few)

I've noticed the odor is stronger and lasts far longer on my '03 than my '01. I don't know if it's because the crankcase is vented to the outside more readily or if the mist trap/retainer is less efficient? I have 6000 miles on my current oil and it still smells strong when standing outside the truck. I haven't had too much trouble with odor coming into the cab via the HVAC system.

Strange... I was just commenting the other day on how I get no odor with the new truck. My 2000 and 95 had very strong odor after the oil change.

Hmm

I had a strong odor in the cab for about the first 2000 miles. Dealer told me it was a protective coating on the engine. The smell has disappeared and I have had no repeat problems and have done two oil changes.
