I just read this post on another forum specific to Dodge trucks:

"We just got a Note from the Factory that no more exhaust brakes are to be installed until further notice. "

This was confirmed by others who had seen the same notice.

What's up with that?

I just installed my Jacobs Ebrake this weekend and I'd sure like to know the message this sends to those of us with Ebrakes already installed.

Most of the problems with them were centered on the auto trans models. Had to do with them snapping the shafts. You have a 6 shooter, so I wouldn't worry too much about it, unless it turns out to be another problem altogether.

I hear what you are saying, but Mopar has never authorized installing Ebrakes on the 3rd Gen automatics. It's hard to believe this would be about "stopping until further notice" installing Ebrakes on automatics which were never authorized in the first place.

It seems to me that there must be more to this story. Anyone with inside information at Mopar/Cummins/Jacobs care to chime in here?

It has something to do with the sealing surface between the turbo housing and the e-brake. There have been problems with rough casting/machining in the mating surfaces and the resulting leaks reportedly causing engine compartment fires. Also there have been problems with the belt driven vacuum pump.

My truck arrived at the holding yard off the train, scheduled for the Jacobs Brake install prior to delivery the following Monday, and the salesman called and told me he has a message from DC saying not to install XXXXXXXX or XXXXXXXX part numbers (Jacobs Brakes) on trucks.

I had the PacBrake installed instead of going without!

The salesman copied the message and gave it to me when I picked up the truck... ... we're on vacation and I don't have it with me.

I really like the PacBrake - but - I had a leaking air line going from the pump to the air tank, so I changed that out this morning (in Redding, CA)... . it activates at this point (warm-up mode)..... but the camper jacks are down so I'll find out tomorrow if it works like before when we move on down to Sacramento tomorrow... .

There wasn't any mention of why the dealership was not to install the Jacobs in the memo..... but personal preferance is now for the air compressor operated style over a vacume set-up.....

BUT... ... lot's of happy customers having both of these brakes!

I just talked to parts guy at dealership. There is a hold on installing EBs on trucks with a build date after 01. 05. 04. He stated that service manager, parts manager, and others have been on the phone since the notice was received a week ago, but have not been able to find a reason for the hold.

Dodge is suppose to supply a fax very soon with the reason for the hold. So... how does that leave those of us with a build date after 01. 05 who have already had the Jacobs installed?

I've installed one too. Looking for any official info on this. How would they notify us of this if it was not dealer installed. ?

Ken. . Mine was dealer installed and I have heard nothing. I am sure if anyone hears via having had a dealer installation, it will get posted... .

The 'other' site mentioned something about a rough surface on the turbo to EB surface causing leaks of exhaust and resultant engine compartment fires, but if that were the case, I would think we would ALL know about it. .

Is the problem with the exhaust brake components or the turbo/tailpipe? If something ends up needing replacement, I sure hope that DC does this under warranty for those of us that did the install ourselves.

Maybe exhaust leak is causing fires...

I saw a brand new dually burn to ground from engine fire on offramp of freeway last week with new cab over camper and all

.

Thought it to be strange having engine fire on diesel?

Idon't think fire is so much a concern, but noise definetly. I have blown out tht gasket now 3 times and it makes the nastiest whisling noise you heard. It flat sucks. My biggest beef has been every 10k miles I have been replacing that darned gasket. Twice under warranty, but now it's my deal. Maybe I will get some garlok and make my own gasket . . . . .

How did you "blow out" the gasket? Could you please provide a few details? Do you believe it was due to an installation problem or failure of the gasket material itself? It seems to me that the gasket should be pinched in tightly between the Ebrake and the turbo so it is not clear to me how it would fail.

BTW, in an earlier post in this thread a member reports that the "stop installation notice" appears to apply only to trucks produced after January 5, 2004. I see you have a 2003 truck.

I've been told there is machining problem with the flange on the 2 listed part numbers and that the exhaust leak has started several fires... but this is only third hand information... .

Hope this helps...
