In late August of last year, my A/C began blowing hot air (approx. 160,000). I figured I would wait until this summer to get it fixed. Well, the summer temperatures are finally here in PA and I took a look at it last weekend.

I bought one of those "recharge kits" with the coolant and gague. On the original hook-up, the compressor never kicked on - even with the A/C on full blast. I did the "recharge," but it the system did not take much of the coolant at all. Then, I hooked up the gague again. This time, the compressor kept kicking on and off - each time the gague went from too full (compressor kicking on) to zero (compressor off). Either way, there was still no cold air.

Does anyone have any experience/suggestions? I have a friend who thinks it is the compressor, but who knows. I am at 200,000 miles right now. Figured that is an adequate service life for just about anything.

Thanks!

R-134 is cheap , nearly free when compared to r-12. Go have the system serviced professionally. This will include evacuation of all the old refrigerant, pulling a vaccuum on the system, addition of a small amout of oil and dye and replacing the refrigerant with the proper (measured) amount. This should be less than $100. 00 anywhere in the U. S. . If you have a leak the dye will tell you whrer and you can decide to fix it yourself or not.
