Light Switch R&R

ballpark figure on how much a clutch install will cost

I havent been paying attention to auto stuff since I have a 5 speed, but an auto might be in the family so I need some lessons.

Is there a switch available that lets you use the lockup in any gear, after you have started moving of course?

Or does it already do that? Also best upgrade is a better torque converter, turn up the line pressure, at least a shift kit, and it will do ok for maybe 550-600 torque? Any links that will answer my questions?

Also, if I put the 1996 215 plate from my 5 speed in the 1998 auto, will it give the auto motor more power?

Thanks again

Eric,

The best deal is to get the DTT TC and VB plus the trans upgrade stuff. Not cheap, but very well worth it.

For a stock auto it will lock the torque convertor clutch (TCC) in 3rd if OD is off or 4th (OD) if OD is not off. You can add a switch to force a lock if hydraulic conditions are correct in these same situations for a stock auto. A stock auto will unlock the TCC after a few seconds of idle throttle (ie. going down hill) so an exhaust brake will not work. The manual switch prevents the unlock in this situation or any other situation except moving the manual shift level out of D. This is where the problem with using a manual lock up switch occurs. It will NOT kick down if the TCC is manually locked so you can lug it and tear things up. If a manual switch is used properly it works fine. DTT sells a smart controller that controls the TCC lock up so that it will stay locked so you can use an exhaust brake, but will allow you to kick down. That's the best way to control the TCC. In addition, the DTT vb allows lockup in 2nd to allow use of the exhaust brake on steep hills where 3rd is too fast.

You will have to talk to someone else about using the 215 plate in the '98 auto to increase power. I suspect that it may in fact decrease power if the pump is different for the auto. Call Piers about this one.
