More Ford Problems

Thanks, TDR Staff

This needs a Cummins......

Kudos to Jim Anderson

I don't know if it is trans or engine related, but a dealer in Western NE has at least 6 used 6. 0L trucks with less than 30,000mi on all of them. I find that interesting. My buddy, a ford 7. 3L guy, said he drove one with ~17,000mi on it and he did not like it at all.

As a posted in a previous (disputed  ) post. My friend Bill (who is real and not imaginary) has his new 2mo old PSD in at Orchard Ford awaiting a transmission replacement as we speak. According to him, there are four other Torqueshift equipped trucks in line ahead of him. Of course, because I'm a TDR member and drive a Dodge, I probably made all of this up.

Of course you did!

I have a friend who was always a ford guy. I conviced him to buy a dodge, so he bought a V-10. Long story short, it was a lemon. So he went back to ford. He now has 2 6. 0h's. The F-350 had 7,000 miles on it when the manual 6-speed took a dump. the F-250 had a little over 20K on it when the torkshift took a dump.

Is that why they are called "Super Doody's"?????

I like the idea behind the Ford transmission. BUT, based on the release of the 6. 0 before it was really ready, makes me believe that one might want to wait a couple of years for owners to find all of the problems with new technology released by Ford.

They are like Microsoft. Just get something out there..... quick! The users will find the problems, let us know what they are and then we will fix them.

A friend of mine who owns a roust about service has had 3 new ford bought back in the last year! One for transmission problems related to the pto and the other 2 for injector problems. The 2 trucks had gone through some incredible number of injectors. The last truck did not even make it off the dealer lot after the last fix. Seems to me that there are more problems than the Ford guys want to admit to.

Hey, now guys, don't just point out Fords problems. I've had my share of problems with my 01, man this thing is a pile of junk! Not counting regular maintenance, in 123,000 miles I've had to replace the ball joints once at 95,000, and uhhhhhhh... ... . oh did I mention ball joints once? Oh yeah thats about it. :-laf :-laf :-laf

I was bored so I did a little snooping over at the NHTSA site. I read in Automotive News a few weeks ago that NHTSA and Ford were investigating complaints of 6. 0's stalling without warning. Here's the summary of the investigation cut-and-paste from the NHTSA website:

TWENTY FIVE OF THE ODI FAILURE REPORTS ARE DUPLICATIVE OF FORD COMPLAINTS. TWENTY ODI REPORTS DO NOT CONTAIN A VIN (AND MAY OR MAY NOT BE DUPLICATIVE OF FORD REPORTS). THE 14 ALLEGED CRASHES AND 2 ALLEGED INJURIES WERE ALL MINOR. SUBMITTED DURING PRELIMINARY EVALUATION (PE) 04-070, FORD'S RESPONSE TO ODI'S INFORMATION REQUEST (IR) LETTER CONTAINED ABOUT 5,000 CONSUMER REPORTS (MORS) AND 8,700 FIELD REPORTS (CQIS). FORD REVIEWED THE COMPLAINTS AND CATEGORIZED THEM. THE MANUFACTURER REPORTS SHOWN ABOVE REPRESENT A COUNT OF UNIQUE VEHICLES THAT FORD CATEGORIZED AS ALLEGEDLY STALLING DUE TO A SUBJECT ENGINE COMPONENT ('A' CATEGORY, SEE FORD'S IR RESPONSE LETTER FOR FURTHER DETAIL); SOME OF THESE VEHICLES RECEIVED MULTIPLE REPORTS. ODI HAS NOT YET CONFIRMED FORD'S CATEGORIZATION OF THESE REPORTS, NOR HAS ODI CONFIRMED FORD'S CATEGORIZATION OF THE REMAINING REPORTS (WHICH FORD STATES DO NOT PERTAIN TO THE ALLEGED DEFECT). FORD SUBMITTED NEARLY 19,000 WARRANTY CLAIMS, MANY OF WHICH INVOLVED CLAIMS FOR A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN (TSB 04-13-08) AND FIELD SERVICE ACTION (FSA 03B05) WHICH FORD IDENTIFIED AS POTENTIAL REMEDIES FOR STALLING COMPLAINTS. ODI HAS NOT CONFIRMED THAT EITHER OF THESE ARE A REMEDY FOR ENGINE STALLING COMPLAINTS. SEVERAL OTHER DEALER COMMUNICATIONS RELATED TO ENGINE STALL WERE ALSO SUBMITTED AS WELL AS OVER 50 PRODUCT MODIFICATIONS, 15 OF WHICH INVOLVE REVISIONS TO THE SOFTWARE FOR THE ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROL UNIT. FURTHER INVESTIGATION IS REQUIRED AND ODI IS UPGRADING PE04-070 TO AN ENGINEERING ANALYSIS (EA). DURING THE EA, ODI WILL ESTABLISH AND UPDATE MANUFACTURER FAILURE REPORT COUNTS, FURTHER INVESTIGATE THE FREQUENCY AND TREND OF STALLING COMPLAINTS, AND DETERMINE THE SCOPE AND SAFETY IMPLICATION OF STALLING EVENTS. ODI WILL ALSO INVESTIGATE FORD'S REMEDIES, THEIR EFFECTIVENESS, AND WHETHER FURTHER ACTION IS REQUIRED.

Notice 13700 complaints have been made in regard to this. Interesting. Ford has a total of 6 ongoing NHTSA investigations into 6. 0L engine complaints. The above is just one of them. Dodge currently has 3 active investigations for their HD trucks. All of them are for the transmission. None for the Cummins engine.

I was at Costco picking up a case of Delo 400 15w 40. The gal at the check out said that was what she used in her truck. I asked "Is it a Dodge Cummins?". She said nope, it was a Ford and that they have two of them. She uses it to pull her horse trailer and has put 20K on it since she bought it in 2000. Lets see that's about 2K a year.

I said "Gee, I just turned 34K and I've only had it for a year and two months. " :-laf
