The other day, I was running down the highway for 8 hours straight going betwen 35 and 75 mph.

Today, I fired up my truck, and drove a few blocks to where I needed to go (my engine was still kinda cold if it matters) and my truck failed to shut off when I turned off the key for a little less that a second.

If you guys recall, for a whole week last summer, my truck wouldn't shut off except with that little lever on the injection pump.

Could it just have been a hickup? Or is this another sign that my pump is going to die?

If it is, I will be posting an add in the classiifieds for a new pump. I can't afford much of anything because I can barely afford to stay in school!

If it is going out, does anyone have any used pumps laying around (that is in relatively good shape) that they could give me relatively cheap? I may need to resort to a payment system over two or three months or so...

(Sorry Pastor Bob, just had to throw that in. )

I wouldnt condemn the pump just yet; it could be the solenoid gone bad (about $75 if I recall correctly). Mine takes a second or so to shut off sometimes; it seems to be more a delay in getting the power shut off than the solenoid winding down slower. Other times, it shuts right down. Take out the solenoid- it is only the electromagnet, spring, and shut off doo-hickey, plus the couple washers on top you can see- and check it for shavings or any other type of conatmination. It is a PITA to get at, but clamp down on it with a 10" Vise Grip and it screws right out. If you were less than 1200mi from me, I'd tell you to come over and I'd have a look at it for ya.

When I say it didn't shut off for half a second, I mean it idled for a half a second after I turned the key off, then died down. When it would never shut of for that week last summer, it just kept idling and sometimes it would die after a while.

It's not the wind-down time, all the cummins powered trucks I have ever been in take a second to wind down, but it's that is kept idling for a split second.

If you can get it to repeat it.....

Put a test light on the solenoid, other end on the neg battery terminal. Have an assistant (preferrably a hot classmate or sorority girl :D ) turn it off, and see if the light goes out immediately or if it goes out just before the engine shuts off. That should tell you if it is getting the power cut with the key or if there is a delay.

Yup. Mine sometimes goes up to 2 sec then shuts down like normal. makes me tend to believe it is a power problem more than the pump itself. If it makes you feel any better, mine is original with 265K, pegging the boost guage when I want to.

Yeah, that makes me feal A LOT better. :D

I'm just a real nervouse person. I tend to worry a lot, especially being that money is hard to come by around here.

Oh, and I have plenty of power, and never have any idling/wot problems. I heard your idle and power start to go down hill after the pump starts going to crap.

Ahhhhhh, ladies, ladies, ladies... ... ;):D

I was consulting the Oracle last night..... that was after blessing the Sacred Piston of course..... :D:D:D

Remove the start/stop solenoid CAREFULLY ... .

There should be the main body, which houses a metal tube with a spring (kinda like a ballpoint pen spring) and a cylinder with a rubber tip.

Check the rubber tip to see if it has any little pieces missing from it... if not it's still good ... if it does it may be just enough of a piece to allow some fuel to trickle thru until it finally starves the engine.

Next if all that looks ok, the spring may be getting a tad weak... carefully stretch the little beggar a bit and replace the parts. That should help to provide a more "positive" close once the key is off.

I'm willing to bet it gets old repainting the ceiling and walls from all the diesel smoke involved in those rituals :D

I thinkyou need to take formula's advice from the other thread you started- get a case of beer (or bottle of your favorite distilled spirit), a sorority chick and kick back and let things go where they may. Heck, make use of your flatbed or extended cab. :--) Let her ease your tensions away:) Life is too short to go around all strung up like that. But I know where you are coming from, with money being tight, and pumps going for a grand new or 3/4 of that reman.

You guys crack me up.

Gotta love those spaciouse flatbeds and extended cabs.

They've seen their use on several occasions... :p

I've been working on a bracket that wil allow me to put the back of the bench seat all the way down... ;)

"... ... ... considering the volume of fuel and air some of you guys are hosing them with??... . "

Hey no hosing in this room... ... . and ya, I got some of the most petrified pistons in town... . I leant that from nascar mark... he was the originator of what I call the "Solar Flare" pyro readings... .

Truly thermonuclear... . Ooooooo that's gotta hurt.....
