Has any one had there govener springs replaced for more RPM? If so,how much RPM are you running now? Thanks MPb

I don't think you need to replace springs to pick up a bit more RPM.
The governor adjustment is right on the side of the pump (also under a metal cap with a tight fit) It is an adjustment screw just like the idle screw and you can see one end of it (at radiator end) of pump. It is just above the manual shutdown lever with the cover cap facing the rear of engine

I talked to Piers about this when I was at BD and he said that 3000-3100rpm would be a good place to set it.

SEEMS like a good question would be WHY?

Since the USEFULL power in the older Cummins is down around 1600-2000 RPM, what practical point is there in increasing maximum RPM? The only "benefit" *I* can visualize, is a higher top speed out on the freeway, but even THAT seems sorta' impractical... AND, won't even comment on the adverse effects on engine reliability when exposed to overspeeding...

One reason is when you upshift to the next gear say from 3rd to 4th on a 5 speed to be high enough in rpm to keep the engine from lugging,in the next highest gear. More useable rpm range. I have been told that these engines were also governed as high as 3100 by cummins depending on the application of the engine.

Shannon, maybe you need a newer truck #ad

, say a 96. Mine runs up to 4000RPM, and pulls hard to at least 3800.

Don, maybe we need to swap engines. That way you would know what it was like to have some one fly by you like you were sitting still. Then I would laugh all the way home. LOL Shannon

DOES ANYONE CARE TO POST DIRECTIONS ON HOW TO TURN THAT HIGH RPM SCREW UP? SOUNDS LIKE WE NEED TO KNOW... :)

I run Ol' Blue's RPM's up to just under 3,000rpms. She now pulls strong to @2800 rpm's. Before she wouls run out of puul at about 22-2300 rpm's. I like it (she does too). I don't run them that high very often, but if the need arises to "get gone" in a hurry all you do is mash it down. Genrelly when racing, I shift as soon as the boost in a particular gear stops climbing.

To turn the rpm's up is easy. The best way to find the high idle screw is to raise the hood and manually work the throttle linkage on the pump. You will see the linkage hit two stops. One stop is the idle stop screw. When the throttle is rotated till it hits the other stop this is the high idle stop screw. Now you just llo9sen the jamnut on this screw and turn it counterclockwise which allows the throttle linkage to have more travel. Be sure to have a tach so you don't over rev it. Very easy to do. You may have to remove a cap over the head of the screw if your truck's pump has never been adjusted just remeber, removing this cap and performing these adjustments will void your 7 year 100,000 mile warranty HA HA. By the way you do not need 3150 to outrun PSD's in my part of the country. It is fun to see the look on the drivers face as an 11 year old truck blows by his new ride. I thin kthat's why they call them POWERCHOKES.

So is there really any more advantage to this other than higher top speed. I never have any trouble with mine lugging when shifting gears.

Now, I was told that the '89s were the heavier block and components than the other years and the rev limit should be 2800 not 3000. Mine is set to 3000 at no load and peters out at 2800 on the highway, I mean err, uhh... . Anyhow, is this true about the very first gen blocks????
