Oil Leak and Gasket Problem

A friend of mine needs a transmission in his 96 1ton. He has been 165K with stock engine and transmission but it quit completely last week. He wants to keep this pickup for a long time, I told him to get a DTT rebuild and put at least a torque plate in the pump. He tows quite a bit and I have tried to tell him what he is missing running stock power. Anyway he is on the way to Midlothian, Texas where a DTT trained transmission man is going to do the rebuild. I just want to know what you guys that are running DTT trannys would get done to the transmission while it is appart. Any advice?

If you do the complete job, regardless of vendor, get the TC, VB, the equivelant of a DTT master rebuild kit for your model truck, and a mag-hitech pan. Double Deep if you are never going off roading.

look in the thread in this forum, best TC for a man on a budget. Bill Kondolay gives a list of the bare minimum updates that he recommends.

Don't worry, he's in good hands.

James Northrum is doing the install in Midlothian. He is probably Bill's #1 installer, period. Great guy, really knows his stuff.

Make sure he tells James whether or not a plate will be added before James gets finished.

Jim's trans

Jim brought me his trans this afternoon. I disassembled it and did an inspection tonight before I left work. It is going to need a LOT of TLC to revive it. I tried to call Jim tonight but call would not go through. Rest assured that he will get all the upgrades along with a complete rebuild.

Thanks for the kudos. This trans almost looks like one out of your truck!LOL

Jim called me yesterday morning and was unsure about getting the whole DTT rebuild. I told him if he was going to keep the pickup to do it right the first time. I tried to talk him into a plate, don't know if he will get one or not. Did you discuss it with him? If you cannot get Jim on the phone let me know and I will try to get in touch with him and have him call you.

Depending on what "lots of tlc" really means. He really needs to do the full job. For example adding a valve body and increasing line pressures, with out taking care of this will just cause things to get worse. He will just be back in the shop later.

I was in the same place. After adding power, I tought the TC was slipping. So I called and made an appointment for the a TC and VB. Now if the installer would have just blindly installed them, and done nothing else, I may have been screwed. I just would have been right back in the shop *****ing and complaining. Because it was not the TC at all. It was the overdrive that was gone.

By taking it apart and doing the inspection. They know the things he "really" needs and what are "nice to haves". Make sure he gets all the really needs. With it all apart, the nices to haves are usually only a little more.

He will be getting the whole works. The short list of bad "hard parts" is pump cover, forward drum, direct drum, overdrive planetary, overdrive sungear,OD sungear thrust plate and bearing. Parts are ordered. Talked to Jim last night and brought him up to date. Will call the shop who is doing the R&R today and go over "gotta do" list. Jim will bring the truck to me after it's put in to confirm proper operation and adjustment.

I'm in the middel of overhaul of my transmission right now. Orded Bill's master overhaul kit and up grades. Should be here tomorrow.

My Overdrive planetary ,overdive sungear, thust plate and bearing needed to be replaced too. Not cheep!!! Is this a common thing?

I didn't see any thing wrong with forword drum or direct drum. Did you replace them because the clutch plates didn't move free?

The input shaft /forward drum assy. had gotten into the bore of the pump cover and galled both as well as wearing the sealing ring grooves. The direct drum has grooves worn in it from the oil rings that ride there as well as the bushing being worn out. It is common to see the the wear mentioned in the OD section as due to the way line pressure/conv feed/lube oil is controlled in the stock valve body tends to not provide enough flow. One of the improvements in the DTT valvebody addresses this and greatly improves on it. There is even some flow in PARK. I have measured as much as 2GPM of cooler flow in park at idle. :D

After everything is said and done and the truck is back on the raod. . and ballpark idea of that a rebuild like this is $$$$???

I have had so much bad luck with automatic is the reason that I bought my truck with a 5 speed. . We pull a 5th wheel and I didn't want to worry about the automatic problems again.
