Not that I mind or anything (I think its a great sound!), but my turbo seems to be exceptionally loud. Its a stock '91 (the truck is) and its been like this since I bought it two years ago. I don't even have to put my foot on the gas hard. When I start easy, I can hear it spool up and when I get to you know around 60-65 it kinda goes away, then at 70-75, its there again. Sounds like its doing alot of work when its really not. I love the sound, sounds like a big rig pulling hard, but does that mean its about shot? I don't wanna keep turning the thing thinking it sounds cool and then blow it. Is that normal? Some people complain of their turbos being to quiet. Mines really loud. Normal or not?

Thanks again!

If it spools up real fast, I suggest you take a look at the firewall side of the exhaust housing and see if there are any numbers cast into the housing. sounds like you may have a smaller housing than stock. I think yours is a 21. 5 if it's still stock. Do you have a boost gauge?

My 93 still has the stock 18 and I can't hear the damned thing at all!:( Guess it's just because I can't hear very good anymore:mad:

Enjoy that sound while you can still hear it!

Acutally, Paccol, I've never been able to find any numbers anywhere on the thing. Although, I've never checked the firewall side, I don't know where to find them. I wonder why its so loud. Sound nice. Maybe it is smaller, but I've never had the means to compare mine to someone else's of the same year. Thanks for the insight and I'll check that today. Thanks agian!

turbo whistle

I once had a sound like you describe on my 1989. It would start mostly on long uphill grades with the trailer in tow, but eventually began doing it almost constantly when the boost was over 7 psi. In conjunction with some other diagnostic work I loosened a couple of injector lines to check for trapped air. This pretty much got the entire top of the engine wet. That was when I spotted the compression leak on an injector. Since it had been squealing for over a year, I decided to let a local diesel shop R & R the injectors and check them out. It's been gone now for almost a year and a half.

And on the subject of bleeding air from the injector lines, I've found that a single full power pass to redline purges them every time.
