Anyone driving to California from Texas before December 2?

Hey all fellow gun enthusiasts!

My willed-to-me Mossberg 500 pump 12 gauge from my uncle who passed away years ago has served me well for my target shooting I have used it for. I even took it deer hunting when I lived back in Iowa but tagged nothing!

Anyway, it is a great gun, but only has a 20" deer/slug barrel on it. It is pretty much worthless (to me) for shooting trap and skeet. Different chokes help a bit but I feel a longer barrel would be better, correct? The spread is too great with a 20" barrel.

So, what I am asking is, what size, brand, and where from? I want something cheap but good. Meaning I will use it for trap and skeet but nothing else.

By the way, I am a weekend trap/skeet guy, not a professional! A simple $100 barrel will suffice.

Thanks! Nick

Hey Nick try this one. I have this exact gun and I love it. I didn't know you were into skeet? I can go to my aunts house in Castle Rock any time and shoot, but its kinda hard to throw clays by yourself if you know what I mean. So if you want to meet up some time let me know I'll let you try my 835 out.

# 61120 12 ga. Pump Action, Blued finish, Satin finished stock, ported 28"VR overbored Accu-Mag barrel with front and mid-point bead sights and ‘Modified’ choke tube

835

This is the one that I asked for for Christmas though!

Silver Reserve "Sporting"

Yeah Greg, I don't go much but its fun when I do! Castle Rock sounds good to me! I will definitely let you know. I went to a coulple different spots near Buffalo Creek and up Rampart Range in the Springs, and they are throw-them-yourself spots, but usually busy!

Also, has anyone been to the Cherry Creek park site? Couple guys at BMW go there but have never been... .

And yes, the 835 is sweet!

Chokes on a 500 slug barrel

My father has a Mossberg 500 Trophy Slugster and there is no provision of any kind for a choke on the slug barrel. However the gun is over 20 years old (been around forever it seems) and its not barrel interchangable. Have they changed the 500s some?

I myself have a Realtree 835 (one of the first ones out) and its a sweet gun--- heavy, but that takes the kick out of the magnum loads for turkey, waterfowl, and the remington copper sabot shots. Have two barrels, one slug barrel for the sabots only-scoped, and my waterfowl/turkey shot barrel.

If Im standing, I use the 835 for gun season, If Im driving, I use the 500 (short barrel).

As for getting another 500 barrel, check out some of the gun shops around, or online, Gunbroker.com comes to mind.

Not sure if it's considered a slug barrel, but it is choked 18", not a true slug-only barrel. I have always called it that because its short and no good for keeping accuracy on long-distance skeet.

18 inches sounds like a "Persuader" barrel..... Special-purpose, self-defense shotguns, riot-dispersal. Mainly designed for buckshot load. And yes, its useless for long-range skeet as you have found out.

I know for a fact its not a slug-only barrel... :-laf :-laf I dont have a clue what would happen if you shoot shot through one, but was always told never to do it... . figured it would have something to do with screwing up the rifling-- not to mention the shot pattern would be all over Kansas (even worse than the short-barrel would do)

If I find or think of any other sites or places for barrels. . I'll post again. Going home for Turkey day, so I'll ask my father about locating Mossberg 500 barrels.

What the difference in a turkey barrell and a skeet barrell? Sorry for the stupid question, but if I can find mine and they are the same its yours. Never had a round through it.

I dont think there is much of a difference between a skeet and turkey barrel as for internals except for the choke end.

If I remember right, the turkey barrel has a permenant choke built in (Modified or something like that) that is tight for long range. Keeps the pellets together for the headshots required on a turkey.

I would think it would work well for skeet... ...
