Well I have to vent!!! Now the in laws can't leave till the march 15! I go back to work on the 18th, there is no way I can drive to AZ and back in three days. So they have the balls to tell me thats ok WE WILL JUST TAKE YOUR TRUCK AND TRAILER wow what am I to do now. Let them take it or tell them to K@#% Off? Oh there both in there 70 ies.

That's a strictly personal decision but I would politely refuse. Pulling a long, heavy enclosed box trailer in the spring winds or still winter weather in northern states is not a job for the elderly or inexperienced. I'd make a polite excuse if necessary to avoid direct conflict or ego blow if necessary. No insurance coverage on your truck if loaned or whatever is required.

Have you considered a commercial transport company? You only have to pay for towed miles, not round trip. It might be less money than your original plan (motels, meals, fuel, etc). Their insurance would only cover trailer damage, so the contents need to be packed well. The transporters in Indiana are begging for work, and with diesel prices low the fuel surcharges are low as well. If that is a viable option PM me for the phone number of a company that is affiliated with the one I am leased to, or do a search for RV transporters.

That is some balls. Just say no. They changed plan on you and you cannot change work schedule.

When my sister-in-law plus family wanted to move back to the West Coast (Indiana back to Oregon). I volunteered we would help them move here, IF THEY PAID US CASH, before we left to cover estimated fuel costs at 13 MPG (truck plus enclosed trailer). ****** my wife off (it is her sister) but I stuck to my guns and they moved on there own with a U-Haul truck, that they are still trying to pay the visa bill on (but that another one of there problems).

Just because I am self employeed and make good money because I work my butt off does not mean I can just drop everything and come to their aid. If I do not work, I do not eat!!

If it were me, I'd unload the trailer... in the quickest way possible... on the front lawn and tell them "Let UHaul be your friend "!!!!:p:D

I can imagine here is how the conversation went.

YA! ya, sure you bet-cha. You kno, I can drive it downn dere! YA! ya, you just have to pay for my fuel, O, and when can you come get it. YA! ya kno, you are a wunder-fool son in law. :-laf:-laf:-laf:-laf

My neighbor used ABF Freight Lines for his move to Vermont. I accessed their website (here it is-- Move with the Truck Rental Alternative - ABF U-Pack Moving) to get an idea of what it will cost me to make a move back east. Six months ago the rate from Boise to central Nebraska would have been $1900 maximum (that is based on needing an entire 28' semi-trailer). It is based on U-load and unload- three days on each end is allowed.

As one of those "elderly" in-his-seventies guys, I've got mixed feelings when I hear you young guys refer to us like we're ready for the old-folks home:). On the one hand, I do better driving, maintaining equipment, etc, than the majority of the younger guys I know. On the other hand, I know a bunch of inexperienced older people that I sure wouldn't trust with anything mechanical--especially a diesel truck on a long tow.

Bottom line, unless your father-in-law has some significant towing experience and has some very astute mechanical abilities, you do him a favor to refuse his request that you loan him your rig. He might be offended now in the short run, but he'll live to make your life miserable another day:D.

The only thing I would worry about is if anything gets wrecked or stolen while in your "possession".

Are they willing to sign a document stating that it is their property and responsibility if something goes wrong. This does not put you in a commercial carry status, just puts you on the right side of the law.

back to check points, in NM west of Las Cruces (and I don't know where else) there is a border patrol checkpoint. they have scoped my 25' utility a couple of times for illigals and drugs. the State Police frequent the place, but it has nothing to do with personal belongings or weight of vehicle, so if the border patrol ask you to drive over to the scope, don't act like the cat that just swallowed a canary.

good luck with the in-laws, wish mine were still alive.

Sory no disrespect for dirvers in there 70s but my father inlaw has only pulled a popup camper not a 32' trailer. I took the trailer to the inlaws and they go WOW that,s a big trailer I don,t think we can pull that. I told them other options and they only want me to move them. As for going in NM I have been pulled over with my motorhome by the Borter Patrol before.
