MPG Averaging Interval

Does anybody know what the interval is, e.g. fill up to fill up, number of miles, time, etc?

I believe it is just simply the average since the last time it was reset/zeroed.

If I do some towing, and my average goes down...it takes a long, long time before the average gets back up to normal unloaded mileage. I usually just reset it after towing.
