96 4x4, 5 speed, 4. 10 rear end, 33 inch tires, 125000 miles, what kind of miles per gallons are you getting? I have a pesky gauge problem going on right now and want to get an idea of how many miles I can safely go on a full tank. I "safely" estimate my mpgs at 12 miles, so about 420 miles a tank (400 to be safe), does this sound about right?

Look in my Signature Im getting 13. 5 city and 16-17 hwy I have Lt315/75r16 on mine which roughly are 34. 5" tires... .

15 mpg mix driving and anywhere from 18-19. 5 on the hwy at 70mph and if it helps all unloaded. I don't think Ive ever had less than 15 mpg.

I have basically the same truck. I have the 11 plate.

It really depends on how fast you drive and how hard you push it.

If I drive 65 or under I can go 500 miles and put around 32 gallons in the tank.

I did make 500 miles once (never trusted my gauge ever since I ran out of fuel one day), and would normally go at least 450 miles, this was before the fun stuff, plate and 3000 gsk. What triggers the low fuel light? Is it the float in the tank or the actual gauge in the dash board?

703 miles and used 32 gallons of fuel on my last fill up=21. 9mpg.

It does depend on how hard your whomping the loud pedal. This last fill was a combination of driving around home along with back and forth to work. I have gotten better and I have gotten worse. I generally go by how many miles it takes me to get to the 1/2 way point on my tank and then judge, but, with yours acting up I'd say 4-500 miles is a safe choice for fueling. The best I have ever gotten was 24. 5mpg on a trip to Van Leek Hill,ONT. Good air ,as it was nice and cool, and a fresh service complete with the valves adjusted helped alot though(along with the Mrs complaining about wanting me to drive slower so she could sight see some,LOL)... ... ... . You guys getting in the mid teens make me appreciate my <5000# pickup, which is down to about 18 mpg from 21 when I got it last March. Time for EDM injectors and an intercooler, when I find another job. I thought the first and second gen mechanical pumped trucks got about the same mileage? Or maybe the guys (and gals) getting 20+ dont want to make us feel so bad?

The idiot light is actuated by gauge position. The sender in my aft tank makes Eeyore seem like an optimist.

My mileage, all driving conservative:

Phoenix traffic, winter: 17 mpg

Phoenix traffic, summer, 19 mpg

Open road, roughly 55 to 65, rolling hills, 21 to 23 MPG.

Towing, mixed conditions, not separated, 13. 4 average.

1996 5 speed, no modifications.

It seems I never get less than 20mpg and my guage hasn't worked since I bought the truck over 90k mi. ago. Just fill it up when I fuel up and reset the trip meter, then get fuel somewhere between 600-700 mi. No telling what will happen if I ever change what I believe is a failing torque conveter(rebuilt 30k mi ago).

Hi all,

I had the usual fule gage problem too. When I finally got around to fixing it, I was able to get the sending unit for about $45 from mopar4less.

Dropping the tank and installing the new unit took about two hours. All in all it is not really a very big project. Just be sure yoiu run the tank nearly empty before you drop it, makes it much easier. The hardest part for me was getting the electrical connector off at the top of the tank. I finally had to break the tab to release it. The plastic gets hard after 8 years.

I think it varies widely from truck to truck. My '92 stock would get no better than about 17mpg highway. My current best is 19. 5 with PW injectors, 16 deg. pump timing, BHAF, open exhaust, and a PDR HX35.

My 2000 isn't any better, but I haven't actually run the numbers yet--I typically get about 450 miles per tank now that we're on winter fuel (but I may not be running the tank down very low since I'm paranoid about running it out of fuel).
