A Letter to General Motors

Im in need of some parts and possibly a manual, as well as any technical information anybody knows for a mid to early 70's MTD farm king tractor. This particular model is a 16 horsepower hydrostatic, with a 3 point. The problem i am having is that the seal on the input to the hydraulic pump is leaking. I removed the froont case of the hydraulic pump to see if there was something wrong with the seal, but it looked fine, so i reinstalled it, and it was fine for a few minutes, and then began leaking again. The shaft where the seal rides doesnt seem to be worn really at all.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Well, i have made some progress on this little tractor. Heres where i am now --

The front cover for the hydraulic pump also contains a bushing - much like a cam bearing. Due to excessive deflection of a bad pto shaft, this bushing was worn almost completley through.

That said, when the shaft would deflect, it would pass the range of motion that the front seal has an ablilty to seal. Unfortunatley, parts are unavailable for the hydraulic pump on this particular tractor so -- after cross referencing part numbers 3 times, i managed to locate a replacement seal through timken.

As for the bushing in the front cover, i turned one down on a hobby lathe and pressed it in, in place of the original one. On friday the seal will arrive and we will see if the fruits of my labor are sweet or bitter.

Okay, update number 2 if anyone is reading this -- i got all the parts assembled and to my surprise it didnt leak ... i found out that the 3 point didnt have any lifting power however! After some research, i learned that this was due to my use of hydraulic flud instead of transaxle fluid in the case of the tractor.

Suddenly the pump began to leak again, and i took it apart to find out why. To my surprise, the sleeve i had machined had walked up into the seal instead of staying in place ... in effect it "pushed" the seal open and allowed it to leak.

My solution i beleive is to machine another one with a tighter fit to the housing to make it harder for it to spin out, and possibly try loc-tite sleeve retainer on it ... . any suggestions as to other ways to retain it in place?

P. S. i can take pictures of the parts i have in mind if needed
