I think I spoke to soon regarding the drone disappearing. I usually drive the highway at around 68MPH. That gives me RPMs at about 1900. Well going home yesterday, I took the truck up to 75 MPH with the RPMs going to 2100 and guess what!! the drone really shows up at 70MPH and when the RPMs hit 2000.

In my previous emails, I mentioned that I put on the angle iron on both the long piece before the resonator and also on the smaller pipe length following the resonator. I checked all the hangers and they look good. the pipe replacement seems to look okay as well. Sooooo, can anyone give me some more advice or suggestions as to what I need to do next. I know I could just drive around and not exceed 68MPH but that would make for a dull life. ]

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,

Not necessarily. Try driving 80mph. The drone will disappear after a few hundred rpm.

Yea, mine does the same thing.

Same drone at about 1900-2100 rpms. Before removing the muffler, 2000 was the "sweet spot", where it was the smoothest & possibly the best sounding.

Now after removing it, its like you describe. Its not too bad, but it gets pretty strong radiating in the back of the cab at 70 mph.

Was thinking about having the resonator moved as far back as possible to see if that helps. Its still worth the performance gain IMO.

I always roll down both windows going through tunnels and get the rpm's just under 2,000 and then stomp on the go pedal. The droan is real loud then. :D

Try continuing back with the angle and clamps. I have 14 clamps on mine, all the way back to with in 4" of outlet( even over the axle ) and 3, home brew 1/2" flat stock and all thread clamps on the muffler to get mine quiet at all speeds and rpm's.

well..

Get someone you trust to drive your truck. Stand by the side

of the road and let them go by a few times so you can hear

the sweet music your truck makes.

You'll get used to the drone. :D

Stock exhaust???

On my 4" system I used a resonator and cleared the drone up that way. Still sounds and performs fine. It's just a harmonic frequency at that RPM. I think the quad cabs seem to have the most problems. A second muffler or a glass pack type application should work. Just something to absorb the vibreation that a pipe can't.

Exhausted with exhaust drone

thought I would try one more time for some input from all the experts at TDR. I had the muffler taken off my stock 98. 5 ISB and left the resonator on - wanting that good diesel sound. It does sound great. However, with the quad cab I am getting the drone around 2000RPM / 70MPH. I have used angle iron and claps all the way back to the tailpipe, including angle iron on the resonator with homemade clamps, but still the drone is there.

Does anyone have other options such as moving the resonator closer up front, putting a flow through muffler on and losing the resonator etc. etc. We are planning a trip at the end of the month from Florida to California and sure would like to have this drone gone. I would like to keep the cost down as much as possible.

Thanks for your help,

Bob Caldwell

I can not remember the part #s

rcaldwell, I put a 3 1/2" straight through muffler from NAPA and have no drone. You will have to get a 3-3 1/2" reducer for the rear and a 4-3 1/2" reducer for the front and shorten everything up as much as possible to make it fit. They also sell a 3" straight through that is louder and shorter and you would only have to reduce from 4" to 3"on the intake end. As I went with the longer muffler, I do not know if the shorter 3" muffler will eliminate your drone.

My truck is minimally louder, yet has a deeper richer toneIMO.

Drone

I would love to go to a 4 in. system... But the drone issue keeps coming up with almost all aftermarket systems... Please let me know when this is figured out.

I know a few of you don't have the problem, but it seems like it is in the majority...

Jardine 4"

No drone , this I believe is true, I dont have the best ears anymore. actually if anyone else is running the Jardine, please give input. Then I'll know if my ears are as hammered as I think they are. Thanks---Proflow

Colin,

I'm running Jardine's with a Magnaflow resonator and I don't have any drone. It was worth the extra 35. 00 I paid for the resonator even though Jerry Jardine said his systems don't have any drone. Much easier to install it just one and be done with it.

The only drawback might be a quieter exhaust if you wanted a louder system. Personally, I like quiet exhausts. Also, there is NO performace hit with the resonator.

drone

4" "homemade" system turbo back. big mother Goerlich's straight thru truck muffler=no drone. nice deep tone, a little louder than stock, with lots of turbo noise out the pipe. i'm all :) :)

Drone

I have 1999 5-spd regular cab,I changed stock air filter,I took muffler off also removed resinator, put straight pipes in had welded now sounds great with no droun. Has enyone else done this. please reply.

Ive got the Jardine system, and I have the drone too,it starts at 2100,which with 4. 10's,is about 69 mph,and lasts until 2500RPM,which is 85mph. BTW 75-85 is where i cruise at,so I gotta crawl,or fly to stay out of the drone zone.

DRONE

I dont have the drone but i just took the muffler off and had a piece of pipe installed. It sounds like stock untill you lay into it then it sounds great. I dont know why some truck have the drone and some dont. I took off the factory brace that was by the muffler but left all other support hangers on. I did angle down my chrome 4" tip. Good luck:D

Drone Cure?

Still have the drone after taking the muffler off and leaving the resonator on and using angle iron and brackets all the way down. Has anybody else with a Quad cab LB when they cut out the muffler and left the resonator on, tried the following to eliminate the drone.

Will the drone go away if you cut out the resonator and just straight pipe it? And if so, how loud is the truck? Biggest concern would be inside the cab, however, I do want to keep my neighbors happy too. Any other inexpensive suggestions are sure welcomed. Remember this is a Long wheel base Quad Cab.

thanks,

Just a thought!!

I'ma wondern'... is it possible the drone could be caused by somthing else AFTER the exhaust is modified. .

I had an oppurtunity to ride in the rear seat of my Quad a while back... GEEEEEZ!!!... I couldn't hear the radio, or any conversation up front... just road noise and exhaust... So with ideas from Greg Long, and other members, I pulled out the back seat, and put on 2 layers of sound deadining (sp) material, plus 1 layer of reflective jute padding on top of all that. Seemed to cut the drone quite a bit, and I could join in on the conversation...

Sound deadening material

CCahill

What type of sound deadening material and where can you get in. I am excited about this, could you respond ASAP.
