I am thinking of removing the cat or the muffler, The stock 4in pipe looks good. What does it sound like with the cat gone leaving the stock muffler, or vise-versa. Could you tell a diffrence in preformence or mpg?

I did the ME left the CAT, sounds good, no drone, little snappier go-pedal and lowered EGT's. I have read here and on other sites that the back pressure from the CAT is something like 1/2 lb - not worth getting into stuff with the EPA and the state over emissions laws and a missing kitty. Unless you are really getting on it, WOT stuff, it is not really that loud, a mellow tone, and if you want a more mellower tone you can do a tailpiece. It a rather inexpensive mod, and if you don't like it you can always sell the ME and get a better aftermarket full flow through muffler.

What is the ME? The truck is all most always hauling. Some loads get big. So it spends allot of time at WOT.

Muffler elimination kit from Genos garage. Works pretty well for me and was alot cheaper than other options. Plus it installs clean and look good with a nice tip on the truck. Scotty

Around town you won't hear much in the cab, but towing at WOT you will notice it alot more in the cab, not sure about the mpg, but it will lower the EGT's.

I have the cat and no muffler. I really enjoy the sound. No bad drone, hardly any extra noise until you roll down the windows and stand on it. I have pulled heavy with it and out in open country you will hardly notice any difference. Pulling a big load through town will wake the neighbors for sure. I can't imagine spending the money for a "system" especially after all the trail and error that has gone on around here trying to find a combination that sounds decent and doesn't drone. Ditching the muffler is a great option IMO.

Does any body know flow rate (CFM) of the stock muffler?

I have been down this road, still fine tuning my thoughts. I put the MEP kit on from Geno's, and liked the sound, no drone with the cat still on. Then i got the itch to take off the cat. Its definitely louder, almost to much at times, but ONLY when you get on it. I have not heard what the truck sounds like other then being inside, so its hard to tell. I know that when i hear the exhaust reflect off a building when i am getting on it, i can hear a slight "wrap, wrap, wrap". At this point i am thinking about putting a ANSA 6" universal muffler on to see if it makes a deeper tone and eliminates the "wrap". All in all its MUCH better than stock, and a LOT cheaper then aftermarket. Lower EGT's across the board, quicker spool up/throttle response, and maybe a . 5MPG gain. Ford and Chevy guys hate it though... . i have always thought that an engines exhaust should make more noise then the engine itself!

I put the muffler delet pipe on Monday, left the Cat. Have taken two road trips. Love it. Nice diesel rumble when taking off. At speed you don't even notice it in the cab.
