4" exhaust...is it REALLY helpful???

PE4x00 pump - issues?

I really can't justify a 4" exhaust right now, but I sure like the sound. I know there's no substitute for bigger pipes for making a deep note, but is there a reasonable facsimilie for the price of a muffler only?

I'm not really considering straight-piping because I don't care to increase decibles, I only want to deepen the tone.

Does anyone have experience in this vane with muffler replacement?

Thanks,

Neil

Probably not what you wanted to hear BUT I ran 4" straight pipe after the stock resonator. I could not tell any change inside the cab at any rpm. Could barely hear any difference with the windows down. But outside it sure sounded deep and mean. Oo.

Rip may have a good stock replacement for what you want.

NAPA has....

3 1/2" and 4" straight through mufflers. I put a 3 1/2" on mine and it just lowered the exhaust note (more of a throaty sound). Under hard towing conditions, it is marginally louder.

I have a 4" straight pipe from the resonator back and sounds troaty. Inside the cab not much of a difference than with the muffler, but outside it sounds good, deep tone. And also turns heads.

thanks for the replies

Thanks for the replies guys. I know Genos has the Muffler Elimination kit and warn that it's louder by about 6-8 DB. Just plain louder is not my goal. The straight-through muffler from Napa sounds interesting. Now I wonder about the design of the stock muffler. I guess I'm off to learn about our mufflers.

Cheers,

Neil

On my 99....

the inlet pipe was a "perforated" cone that ended at about 1 1/2" dia on the far (rear) end of the muffler and then another "perforated" cone started at the front (offset to the other side of the muffler) end (approx 1 1/2" dia to start) and swelled to 3" at the rear before exiting the muffler.

After installing mine, I parked next to a stock muffled 2000 and the owner and I decided that the stock system sounded "tinny" compared the oth NAPA muffler. I put one on his truck the next week.
