Ok I am on an exhaust hunt right now for a different sound, so going to try a few different mufflers most likely.

My question is on muffler lengths..... how does it affect the sound produced?

Magnaflow has 4 different sizes "for diesels".

I am just unsure of what characteristics are changed when changing the length.

Anyone have a comment?

I heard the difference between 2, straight thru, 4" mufflers. They both had the same outside diameter, but one was 12" long & the other about 24" long. The 24" definately has a different sound. It's been over a year, but i wanted to yank the 12" off mine right away. :D

While I have never compaired mufflers to each other, a general rule of sound: same dia. , longer = lower tone.

The bigger it is the lower the tone should be.

That's why the tweeter speaker is that cute little critter aimed at your face and the woffers are 5" or bigger.

Kat, go to a big rig muffler shop and you will have tons to choose from.

I'm running a real long, straight through 4 inch on the front as far ahead as I could put it.

On the back I have a big round striaght through 4inch resonator.

I love the sound and had to do this because of the cab drone I had before. The front muffler before was a 4inch dynomax race muffler but it drove me nuts on a long haul to to new mexico.

It might have got a little hot and burned out. If I remember right they are only rated at 1200deg.

Mine at idle is for sure a cummins and real quite at any speed in the cab.

Outside all you get is loads of whistle and when it loads up you get a nice groan outside the cab.
