I am running an empty cat with no muffler, just straight pipe right off the cat. Is their any muffler i can run that will quiet it down without much or any restiction or power loss?? #ad
My wife is afraid of it cause its so loud!! #ad

My wife had the same complaint about my straight pipe. I completely removed the cat however. To keep things happy on the home front, I installed a Dynomax Ultra Flo muffler that was 3" in/3" out design. This is a straight through design, and changes the exhaust tone quite nicely. The part number is 17223. Buy it from Summit Racing, they had the cheapest price I could find.
Good Luck!

Walker 21471. 4 inch straight thru. You can use reducers to use it on a 3 inch system. Then if you decide to go 4 inch, you already have a muffler.

I am in the same position. My wife wants me to quiet the truck down, so I am looking for something to take the edge off. I got my truck inspected yesterday, so I put the cat and muff back on. I drove it a few miles, and I couldnt stand it. The straight pipe went back on that afternoon. I love the sound of the exhaust, but I need to keep the peace. This does give me the excuse to go with a 4" exhaust, so this compromise might not be that bad. Still undecided on what I am going to do, so I will be watching this thread closely.

I too tried the straight pipe approach and
didn't like the "cornbinder" sound. (the rest of you BOMBers, don't get mad at me, just personal preference. . ) Anyway, I installed a Dyna Flow, 4", straight through
racing muffler. What a difference!! The truck is still louder than stock but a VERY low, loud sound. Going through town on residential streets, I can set off the cheap car alarms just by the low resonance/vibration of the exhaust. He, He...
A very distinqued(sp) sound.

Correction of previous post.
It's a Dynomax muffler, not a Dyno Flow. .
Sorry, still haven't had my morning coffee... .

Another approach, sorta like having the truck quite and great sounding at the same time, add insulation. By insulating the back of the cab below the rear glass (it's currently bare metal) you can make a huge improvement. To really help, remove the complete interior and do it right. A search will yeild ideas on materials and technique.

Try a Walker 21468, 3" straight through, nice sound, 0 back pressure, I use these on my 3" turbo Diesel systems.

Here's another option to think about. Because of clearance problems past rear cross member/NP205 I'mpretty much stuck with 3" to a point past X-member. '98s use an odd little resonator 3" in 4" out ahead of the muffler. Picked one up at the wrecking yard and a Walker 54 150 (4" mandrel bent tailpipe) and I gotta say its not too loud, kinda deep and throaty, breathes good and still lets you know when you get on it.
2 cents.
