Somewhere a ways back I thought there were threads or pic's on how to do it. Does anyone know where or have step by step procedure ? I've seen "simple to do" but it seems pretty complicated thus far.

Thanks again.

From 2004 FSM:

REMOVAL

WARNING: BEFORE SERVICING THE STEERING

COLUMN THE AIRBAG SYSTEM MUST BE DISARMED.

I read discard steering wheel nut and replace. Is that really necessary because it is a cinch nut OR, replace it with some Loctite ?

Thanks again.

They are just covering their butts, but if its not expensive replace it, if they are, take a center punch and carefully punch it at three locations evenly around it. that should give it some resistance and act as a cinch nut, use locktite as well just to help.

Also, you do NOT have to remove the steering wheel to replace or repair the switch--

ALL you have to do is:

(1) remove the 2 screws which hold the plastic "clamshell" together behind the steering wheel (torx bit)

(2) Remove the steering wheel up/down lever (pull back towards the driver seat)

(3) Pull the top half of the clamshell up and the bottom half down, spreading it out around the ignition switch

(4) Disconnect the wiring harness from the switch by pulling back the red locking tab and then sliding the plug towards the front of the truck

(5) Remove the 2 phillips screws which hold the multifunction switch to the steering column (they are on the left side top and bottom, just next to where the switch stalk joins the switch body... NOTE--turn/position the steering wheel until you can easily reach the phillips screw with a screwdriver). Then, depress the little grey tab in the center of the switch body while pulling along the stalk, strait towards the drivers door... it WILL slide right out.

(6) Installation is the reverse of the previous steps.

YESSSS ! This is what I was looking for from a while back but couldn't pull it up. I removed the clam shells up to the point where I couldn't figure out how to release the up/down lever and gave up putting it all back together. Now I will try to pull backwards on it and hope that it will release without any problems. I have a new switch so I'm not going into the repairs now, I'll just keep it for the future.

Edit. I want to replace the WHOLE switch assembly not just the STALK. Will the procedure still work without pulling the wheel off ?

Thanks again.

You do not pull it back, pull the stalk straight toward the driver door. The entire switch will pull out. Just make sure you pulled the two phillips screws that I point out in the link Bill provided.

I should have highlighted the screw holes in the photo before I posted it. Look at the top photo and you will notice 4 holes in the switch and bracket near the base of the stalk. Two of the holes are in the black bracket at 2 and 4 O'clock. There are also two holes in the light blue part of the switch, just to the right of the holes in the bracket. The switch is pulled apart in the photo about 1/2 inch. So when the switch is in the truck, the two screws go through the black and thread into the blue. They will be tight up against the steering wheel when in the truck, so turn the wheel right or left to get better access.

When you put the new switch in, you can just leave the screws out. The switch snaps into the bracket pretty tight.

To clarify, I am having difficulty removing the UP-DOWN lever which prevents me from removing the lower plastic cover NOT the stalk. Also, I have a whole new switch which I want to replace NOT just the stalk. I don't believe the stalk is the problem its the circuitry unless the stalk has something in it.

IF I understand you correctly, the tilt steer lever is preventing you from removing the plastic cover? If so, it should either pull backwards toward the seat, or have one screw that has to be removed, and then come out.

The control stalk and circuitry is all one unit.

YES, I can't remove the lever in order to remove the lower plastic half. As for a "screw to remove" I have removed the 3 that are located underneath holding the clam shell together 2 BLACK ones directly under the wheel, 1 smaller silver one by the up/down lever. I can't see anymore screws holding the "spring retracting up/down lever anywhere that prevents me from "pulling straight back" and then out. Is there another screw that holds the lever in place that has not been mentioned here ??

Thanks

View attachment Tilt lever removal.pdfSorry, misunderstood what was stopping you. From the FSM.

TILT LEVER KNOB RELEASE

REMOVAL

1. Remove the screw (1) securing the tilt lever knob

(2).

2. Remove the steering column opening cover (Refer to 23 - BODY/INSTRUMENT PANEL/STEERING COLUMN

OPENING COVER - REMOVAL).

3. Remove the lower shroud.

NOTE: Use special care not to pry on the clockspring electrical connector when removing or installing the

mounting screw located next to the clockspring.

In Step 4, do I need to remove the two screws ? Aren't they for removing the tilt assembly and NOT the MFS ?

Thanks again.

That is correct. That is why I only pasted the first three steps of the procedure. Forgot the rest were there on the . PDF.
