I bought a new multi function switch a few weeks ago and went to install it yesterday. I got all but one of the screws out but realized I needed a different size star bit for the last one. I need to take some time to go get one.

While I was working on this, I thought I noticed that in order to remove the old multifunction switch, it looks like you have to also remove the steering wheel. In order to pull the old switch out of the socket, it has to be pulled toward the steering wheel, and the steering wheel butts up right against it.

Am I missing something here ? Or is there any easier way ? If the steering has to be removed, Im just going to take it somewhere and and someone else do it.

I was having a problem with my head lights when switching hi to low etc. I pulled mine (multifunction switch) to see why I was having the problem. Had no problem removing it. Maybe your 02 has some other way of it being mounted and wired differently.

While I don't have an answer to your question for sure on my 01.5 it came off without taking the wheel off. IIRC I had to remove the column shroud (2-3 screws) and then remove a few screws for the mf switch and then another one for the plug into the switch.

If I remember correctly what it looked like, it looks like it has to pull straight out toward the steering wheel, not toward the door.

Well, Ill have to get the correct star bit to find out. But, with the cowling removed, with the way the pins appear, it sure looks like you have to pull back on the old switch toward the steering wheel. And the way the back of the wheel butts up against the top of the switch, I just cant figure out how to pull it out.
I dont have a chilton manual for this truck. Think Ill pick one up at the parts store when I go to get the start bit.

MULTI-FUNCTION SWITCH REMOVE/INSTALL
(1) Disconnect battery negative cable.
(2) If equipped, remove tilt column lever.
(3) Remove both upper and lower shrouds from column

(4) Remove multi-function switch tamper proof
mounting screws (tamper proof torx bit Snap On
TTXR20B2 or equivalent required).
(5) Gently pull switch away from column. Loosen
connector screw. The screw will remain in the connector.
(6) Remove wiring connector from multi-functi

Tamper proof just in case you are still unsure about what these are. The torx bits with the holes.

Aha.. Which would answer another question I had. My close vision isnt quite that good. So tamper proof must mean there is a raised center in the screw so I need a bit with a hole in the center (?) No wonder bit I have doesnt work.

They are security torque heads bolts and the special bit is required for removal. Why are they just here?

Phone company started using them first in payphone kiosks, then started showing up in men's room stall dividers. Trucks started using them to hold the radios in after a while. Now they are everywhere......

Harbor Freight tools sells a small tamper proof bit kit just like the one mwilson pictured. While I don't like to buy many tools there, I don't mind buyng occasional use tools from them. That kit is downright handy to carry around for taking part old phone booths!!…lol

Thanks for your help. I found a tamper proof tork drive at the local hardware store for about $5. When I got the tork screw out, it was readily apparent how the switch comes out (as you already knew ) and everything works again (for now).
