Son in the Dallas area is considering buying his first Cummins- I must have raised him right! ;-)

He's looking @ 2011-12 models, preferably 4x4 short beds with manual trannies. Any advice on what he should look for or avoid?

Looks like the Chip did not fall far from the Block Bill ! Should be looking for a 2013 on up.

Bill- any particular reason to avoid the older trucks?

Look for a 5.9 and save the headaches if he doesn't want to drop the coin on a new one.

I'm just going by memory here, but I believe the 2007.5-2012 models were equipped with a lot of emmisions equipment. The mileage wasn't as good as the older 5.9's and the engine oil life was shortened due to fuel saturation. Hopefully others with the later models will chime in, and tell us their experiences.

Stay away from the manual transmission, its not like the early NV5600. DMF failures, and when converted to a SMF, they are noisy.

Ask him if he want's to buy the In-laws 10 cab and chassis, he wants to get rid of the headache!!!!
