Valvoline 15w-40 Premium Blue

PACBRAKE - September, 2015 Promotion

I have been reading and learning on here for a while, this site helped me decide to buy my 03 2500 and I love the thing. Well now I am in the improvement and mod mode and decided to put in an oil bypass system. I purchased the oil cap for my 5.9 and then needed the 90 Degree swivel for the cap that then goes to the oil filter.

I have read and heard so much about Amsoil this and Amsoil that all around the web, that buying anything from them was not even on my mind as turning into a BS situation, but it did.

So the 90 degree swivel for my oil cap, you know, that teeny tiny 90 degree nipple that goes into the oil cap then attaches to the oil line coming from the filter. It's a BP 242 and it weighs what? an ounce? the size is what? an inch by an inch?

What does this marvelous company send it in? A freakin box that is 10x8x9 packed with paper and the BP242 hidden in a slip of paper.

Oh yeah, here's the beauty of Amsoil, they sell the BP242 for $4.75 the amazing rip-off of the scheme is the packaging at $8.50.

Total bill $14.05 for a $4.75 part.

179% mark-up for the shipping and handling

I will never buy from AMSOIL again, I don't want to hear how amazing they are because they are thieves. I will make it my quest that everyone knows about this transaction for as long as I can and as far as I can

No I didn't contact them and try to make it beeeettttterrrrr and to give them a 2nd chaaaanncccee, if they have to be told that 179% mark-up for shipping, a box big enough for a soccer ball when used for an item the size of a Quarter and that the whole thing could have been done with a padded envelope that costs a buck then that says it all.

I am not expecting or wanting anything from anybody, I got the 90 degree nipple and paid for another one of life's lessons, I just want to pass it on so you don't get ripped off also

Please see included pics for your viewing pleasure, the 16.9 oz water bottle is for size reference...Enjoy

Seems like you could have went to the local Napa or parts store and found one just like it for cheaper and not pay shipping. JMHO. I have never liked AMSOIL. Too expensive!!

I would imagine UPS has a minimum charge, I doubt a smaller box would be any cheaper. I live 10 miles from the hardware store, so it would cost me at least that much to go get one, plus about 40 minutes of my time. I don't see the issue.

Nice first post. Just like first impressions, you don't get but one, so.....

Why did you need this fitting from Amsoil? Was this fitting missing from your kit or did you mess it up or lose it? Like others have said, it wouldn't have mattered if they'd shipped it in an envelope, if that box was shipped UPS to a residential address I guarantee they paid more than $8.50 shipping. It is available at other places so you could have gone hunting one. What if it was available ONLY from Amsoil and you had to drive to them to get it? What would that have cost you?

Cobra;
they sent you the right one anyway. That is a 90* elbow as stated, could have been purchased from a hardware store. The one you requested has a swivel on top so the cap can be removed with out disconnecting any hoses. Call them and have them send the right one. Mine cost more than $4.75, but it was the right one with a barb AND see below for more info-------------.

Here is what you need, BP89 Assembly, filler cap return line fitting, sells for $8.10 and you do need the 90* fitting with a barb for the hose or threaded for a fitting on the hose attachment. Go to there site and search for this part and then talk to a person to make sure your getting the right part. I tried to get the pic to load but could not find it to show it.

What are they stealing? Have you priced shipping lately??

A smaller box wouldn't have been cheaper, and smaller boxes are easier to lose.

Even a small USPS flat rate box is $5.95, and if there is any handling then it's about the same price.

On small cheap items shipping is often more than the part, it's what it costs to ship something.

If you don't want to pay for shipping buy it locally...

I am not sure it's a rip off, but whatever.

BTW: First post, so welcome to TDR.

I ran into the same type of shipping BS with Midway USA. They sold me a box of 20 rounds of rifle brass (.338 A-Square) for 80.00 and then had the nerve to charge 47.00 shipping.............Needless to say when I saw the shipping charge for that, I called and raised hell. They said "Oh well, what are you going to do?". I ended up going factory direct and they put my shell casings in a flat rate box for me and all total cost 87.00.

"Shipping" charges or "Handling fees" are just another way for businesses to make money.......if you let them! If it makes you mad, do something about it.

Things cost more than they used to. It's a result of printing more money.

It's over 18 trillion and every bit it goes up we pay more. There are a lot of consequences for the U.S. carrying and making this debt and we are all paying for it, yours is just one example.

He's right. It's a rip off. USPS padded envelope would be a buck at most. Just lazy shipping practices. Everything through one shipper, no thought about the cost until no one calls a second time. Then it's too late.

Many companies don't use USPS, if you don't like they don't use them. Amsoil tells you shipping cost at checkout, so it's not a surprise.

UPS has minimum rates, the weight was low enough the size of the box didn't effect the price.

Many companies also don't use padded envelopes, as they tear easier than boxes.

I have no dog in this hunt, but I have shipped parts all over the world, and no sane company would ship product by a method that does not offer tracking. The cheapest trackable method is roughly $5.50, and it goes up from there. That's the way it works, folks.

Welcome to the forum.

Now I do oil sampling on my engine at every oil change to insure that I know what is going on with the wear and oil condition do to fuel dilution than can occur with the 6.7L engine. How much do you thing it cost to ship 1 plastic bottle that fits in a 6" X 9" bubble wrap envelop?

The United States Post Office will not ship this because of the oil; it is considered hazardous material. So I have to ship this by UPS which cost $8:56 last time I shipped a bottle to the lab in IN less than 300 miles away. Shipping does cost;there is no free lunch in the world.

If $19 was too much to have it delivered, why didnt the OP just go to a hardware store that has a weatherhead board & pick it out there?

Jim, I use Blackstone to do my OA. When I took the first sample to the post office I also took a memo from Blackstone that explained to the postmaster that it was approved to mail the sample. The bottle as supplied by Blackstone goes for less than $3.00. Hope this helps.

Same here, although I didn't have to show them the note. I simply explained what it was and how it was packaged and they were satisfied.

It's more like job security for the guys in the shipping dept. Larger companies negotiate shipping prices since they can pit FedEx with UPS .

Their shipping department is probably a standalone profit center and if so you pay for the shipping department’s employees, their benefits, square footage, phones, tools, materials, etc and the actual shipping cost. They are trying to make a profit on the shipping effort as well as the sales.
And if they are not trying to make a profit then it’s called a cost center, which either pays for itself or if it does'nt then it’s called a loss and gets looked at by the bean counters.

Reminds me of offers on tv selling things. Get the second one for free, just pay separate postage and handling. Always wondered why they just can't put another one in the same box.
