First he marries my sister  then today he buys a powerjoke  He lives in Colorado and he wasnt too happy when I told him the phord ECM needs to see 300 RPM before it will fire the injectors, people here in Texas plug them in when it gets below 30F. Now the teasing starts!! Atleast he has a 6 speed manual so we will be on even terms when he drives it down here and my CTD spanks him :D I did point out that most people his age KNOW that cummin' beats stroken'!! I dont think he knew that the "engine" was made by International, ooops, Inter-trashional, oooops, Navistar or is it Never-start?

He has a friend that owns a construction company there and he bought three (3) new maxipads, all three have blown heads or head gaskets, seems the cold weather must put extra expansion stress on the old beer cans. The GM stealer told him it has something to do with the transmission shifting hard while he was pulling construction trailers causing the heads to blow :D

No, I didnt ask for VIN, S/N, WO #, on the trucks, and I couldnt care less if the maxipad boys dont beleive it.

Some people never learn. I was at the feed store yesterday and the owner said he bought a real truck to haul feed. He showed me new dura-max he bought I told him, "I thought you bought a real truck, this is just a diesel wannabe". He said he couldn't afford the cummins so settled on this one. I then told him with the weight he pulls how can he not afford to get the cummins. Oh well we are still friends and he offered to show me how it runs when we take a couple of his trailers to get a load of feed sometime soon. Of course I didn't dare tell him what I have done to mine.

I question that ^^^^^^. Point your finger at someone, how many are pointed back at you? I don't know your sister, but there is nothing dumb about buying a ford. Is the Cummins a better engine? Absolutely. Does the ford have some advantages? Absolutely. Different strokes for different folks doesn't make anyone dumb in my book. MHO if you care.

I guess if you enjoy replacing glowplugs, and preying everytime you get off work that your phord will start. Then they probably do have advantages:D I understand that glowplugs are for indirect injected engines, (intake heaters for direct) so what is the powerjoke????? Also if your oil foams at all with a PS the injectors will not pop, (they are hydraulic).

I had two PS a 99 and a 2000,and I think they were great trucks,to each his own. I put 120,000 on the 99 no problems other than the cup holder,I just like the Dodge better, but if I had to choose it would be a Dodge because of the Cummins, but if I needed a truck and a Dodge wasnt available Id buy a PS in a minute. Just my 3 cents:--)

PS I never changed a glow plug EVER. .

YES they are direct... But why do they have glowplugs? There is no pre-cup to heat with the glowplugs. Also if you kill a PS at a light, or whatever, you must let the glowplugs cycle again before it will start. What gives? With a cummins it can be cold outside hit the key without waiting for the intake heater to burn and it will start. Sounds like a screwed up system to me.

Thats not true,I never had to wait for the light to go out it always started,as long as it is reasonably warmed up.

This feed store guy doesn't make sense. Around here, GM dealers are still fetching $40-42k dollars for a new Duramax, and you can buy new Cummins trucks all day for $30-32k dollars. If he shopped used he coulda bought two Cummins trucks for the price of one DM.

I noticed something very odd in thursdays weekly local auto trader magazine. I counted 8 used Duramaxes already for sale all in one magazine. Those were some satisfied owners eh? What does that say for a year old introduction?

Ummm, the Powerstrokes have a intake heater grid, glowplugs, and a fuel heater. Some don't have the heater grid but most do.

As for the cold starting, we have several psd's. All have faithfully started down to the coldest here -20. Once they start, they won't gel because of the fuel heater. What keeps a cummins from gelling when it gets really cold??????

Yep, My fuel heater keeps mine from gelling, too. All I know is, the coldest it's been here in Georgia was 18* so far this year. My next door neighbors PS cranks over several times (2 or three seconds on a warm morning) before it will start and that's with most mornings in the mid 40s. Of course, come to think of it, it did the same thing last summer when it was hot. Now, with that said, if the Cummins wasn't available, I would buy a PS. My brother in law (he's dumb, too) owns two. One to drive and one spare. He just turned 100K on his first one so he bought a brand new one for his show truck and drives the old one for work. Go figure.

Yeah, but if they were all smart, look at the Chevy and Ford builders that would be unemployed. :--) . Just kidding guys.

I think Johnboy is referring to a tank heater that we do not have. If your fuel gels in the tank or lines you are dead in the water with a Dodge, you can only hope that the treatment you should have with you will liquify it again and that you have the battery left at that point to get it going again. We have a fuel heater, but it is not a tank heater.

Hey, my brother in law is dumb too... ... . he owns a gas Chevy and a gas (7. 4L ) Fix Or Repair Daily. Actually both brothers in law have gas guzzlers.

I was talking with a local tool and die shop owner last spring. . he was building dies for some part of the duramax injection system for GM. The GM engineer that came to his shop to look at the tools told him that the Cummins engine is the goal that all others aim for in the small truck engine business. He mentioned "mean time to failure" of the Cummins was by far the highest , followed by the Duramax (limited data) with Power stroke lagging in the distance. The Cummins was 3 times the Ford, and almost twice the Duramax.

Numbers based on "normal" light truck use, whatever that is.

Just thought I'd throw some more fuel on the fire.

This post is going to create weeks worth of comments on the gm sites. Is the Durmax 6. 6l rated as a medium duty engine? I know the Cummins is, but what is the standard that makes a engine medium duty?

No the D-Max is light-duty. I don't know what makes it meduim duty or not, it must be the manufacturer that says so.

I love these stories of the head gaskets and aluminum heads melting. I have 10 brother in laws with the KILLER DOWEL PIN problem. 5 of the them the block split into 6 pieces. I have another buddy who was driving down the street and the front end started THE DEATH WOBBLE then the KILLER DOWEL PIN broke the block and caused him to rear end a new D-MAX and total the Dodge. The guy in the D-MAX was ****** at the scratch in his rear bumper.

Wow, 10 brothers in-law! I don't know how you do it. :)

I heard the same story but it was a Yugo that got the scratched bumper from being hit by the Dmax. :D I guess we can't believe everything we read.
