My brother was on his way home today about 1:30 from syracuse NY south on 81 and he pulled off an off ramp to grap a bite and he said the truck pretty much just cut out as he was down shifting. i know VPs die often, but usually theres the dead pedal associated with it? do some VP just die? could it be the dowel pin? what happens when they break. from my understanding my truck 02' doesnt have a dowel pin. so i never bothered educating myself about them. could my brothers 00. 5' have dropped the pin? any ideas would be a great help.

30* air temp and hes uses additive pretty regulary. he flashed the truck and it threw a P0460. ive got a sneeking suspicion that i could be the dowel pin. what happens when they let loose?

By late 99 they had changed the timing case or timing case cover(Don't remember which one) to hold the dowel pin in. Your 02 has the same design as the late 99's.

The KDP can pop out and damage the timing case cover, timing case, jam the cam shaft gear which causes a lot of expensive damage and chew up the other gears as it rotates amoung them.

If the fuel pump went out first the vp44 could quit with out any symptoms.

It could also be the crank shaft position sensor, I believe if the PCM /ECM is not recieving data from it the engine will shut down.

As ThrottleJockey suggested get the code(s) from PCM/ECM.

Code 0460 = Fuel level unit no change over miles.

Could mean gelling but if he was driving it for some time I don't think the fuel would be gelled. Also if he was driving for a while it would mean that fuel would be pulled from the tank.

He could of ran out of fuel.

The infamous fuel sending unit could of struck again.

Ah, the Mule found it.

Could be out of fuel and not know it. The fuel sending unit cannister is, uhmmm... . not the greatest engineering achievement out of Detroit.

What's the update?

after a few hours he finally got a tow truck and had it towed to a dealer. they took it in this afternoon and they arent going to look at till the tommorow morning. he said he'd only gone 40 or so miles on a full tank. luckily for him he took and alternate route home and we have some family 20 miles from where he broke down. hopefully the problem is minor. thanks for the input, hes gonna suggest those few things to the dealership to hopefully aid in a quick recovery.
