Most likely going to have to put down the greatest dog in the world tonight. For 13 years, our Australian Shepherd Jake has given our family much more than we have given him. He has been with us on every vacation we went on except the flight to Alaska. The last 3 weeks have been tough. His joints have gone down hill fast and he hasn't been able to get up since last night. Multiple vet visits, medications... . I have always differentiated between humans and animals but d-mn, this is hard to say good-bye. The next dog, when we get one, is going to have some awful big shoes to fill. Thanks for listening.

Tom,

Thoughts and prayers go out to Jake, and your family. My family had to put down Rockwell, our 12 year old Rottweiler on May 15th of this year. There is nothing that can be said to make it easier, because it sucks, but in time, the sadness will be replaced with the happy memories he brought to your family.

May Jake Rest In Peace.

Sorry to hear of your misfortunes, Tom. I too have a 13 yr old lab who is going downhill lately. He got ran over several years ago by a haywagon (always had an obsession with chasing tires that I couldnt break). Well now more than ever hes paying for it as some days he cant even use his rear hip/ hind leg. Hops around on 3 legs somedays and on his bad days he barely wants to get up. Its tough to watch and if he gets much worse Im going to have to do something about it. My condolenses to you and your family on the difficult decision your about to make.

A few years back, unfortunately I had to put another dog of mine down (also 12 years old, Cletus). He was in rough shape, and I was constantly coming up for excuses for not putting him down, or convincing myself that he was fine. Someone I worked with asked me, "Are you keeping the dog alive for him, or for you?" Made me think a little.

As tough a decision as it was, I probably let (or forced) him to hang on for a few weeks longer than I should have.

Again Tom, very tough decision, they truly become a member of the family.

Tom, looking at the photo of your daughter with her head resting on his mane brings back all too vivid memories of last week when our border collie was given little hope of recovery. Our prayers are with you.

Yes, It's the hardest thing to do to let them go on there next journey alone. But we can't change the facts of life and nothing makes any easier. Sorry to hear about your pending lose.

I know the feeling as it was really rough when we had to put our 16 year old dog down. She was just a mut but a great dog. We still miss her very much, God Bless.

Thanks to all for the kind words. Yesterday was one of the tougher days in our family's life. Even three of my neighbors came over to hold him and say goodbye. Many people over the years offered to adopt this dog if I was unable to care for him. I held him until he went home to chase squirrels, cats and the mailman all day long. It's hard when it hurts my wife so bad she doesn't want to think about doing it over and getting another dog. When you think about it, it seems that the harder it is toward the end, it's a reflection on how good it was during his lifetime.

Sorry for your loss... . It is one of the toughest things I have had to do myself. I had to put my English Bulldog "Tuffy" down in March of this year. He was my shop dog, sidekick at every car show, and went everywhere with me except in the summertime( because it is so hot here ) I still think about him all the time.....
