THAT TURNED OUT SWEEEET!

Did you need to do any modifications to the dash over than just cut the ashtray face out?

So the 520xl was mounted to the ashtray and you just slipped it back in?

How did you put this thing up?

And how does it sound with the internal speaker alone?

Thanks!

Erik

I think that is my next project, and after, a full police scanner in the new Tuffy Console I want to get.

yeah there was some cutting back there. i had to remove the left screw hole that holds the ashtray in and part of the partition between the radio and ashtray inside the dash. i mounted the bracket to that partition. it was like it was meant to go there.

the ashtray: i cut the face off the front of it and made the bezel for the radio. it looks even better in person.

i have an external speaker mounted in the b-pillar window recess and i can hear the c. b just fine. i havent tried it with just the original speaker as i didnt think i would hear anything.

heres two pics of what i was doing. i found the notch on left side (tan plastic) was not totally neccesary. the radio bracket really beefed up what was removed and the cb is mounted very solidly. the second picture shows while i was test fitting before i made the finishing trim out of the ashtray face.

area of where to cut. leave the screw hole on the right side. the left screw hole will have a cut right through it. use a hacksaw blade to cut the tab off where you are going to mount the uniden bracket. you will have to use a small angle drill to drill through the plastic and bracket for the new holes. the factory holes in the bracket wont work. i used a angle adapter w/ a 1/4" bit tip driver and a self tapping screw. (making do with... . ) anyways, it worked good. i removed the bracket and superglued nuts to it so i could hold them easier until i could get a wrench on. the vertical tan plastic on the right tapers in towards where the radio sits. so, part of it will have to be removed if you want things to look right when done. the easiest way to get the cb in and out while test fitting is to remove stereo and insert the cb through its hole and bring forward into place from firewall. the last cb install i did like this was a very snug and perfect fit. if you allow some extra time you can easily do this too.
