Maybe you guys can help me with a couple questions.

Truck ran fine to work. Shutdown and it sat for about 3 hours and when restarted, it had picked up a very slight rough idle. In the space of about 30 city blocks, rough idle turned into dead hole with lots of smoke out tailpipe and loud popping sound from induction side and tailpipe. Checked oil and water and everything was OK. Never had any sudden noises or abrupt changes. Checked valve adj. and everything was good and everything was opening and closing when it should. Anybody got any thoughts?

Second; Engine passed 416K miles awhile ago. I've got a 1st gen intercooled eng. lined up to do a repower job. I understand the principles of intercooling but am wondering if there are any internal changes between the intercooled and non-intercooled engines like comp ratio, injectors / pump timing? Can/should I run this thing as is and mount and pipe the intercooler as soon as I can, or is the truck grounded until I can get everything hooked up? I'm currently walking, so transportation is pretty high up on my priorities. But not at the expense of the newer engine. I've heard everything from "won't hurt a thing" to "will hurt it big time". What do I do, Dear Abby?

Thanks, Jones

Jones,

Sorry to hear about the engine. I remeber reading in a Cummins book (can't remember where or when) that the cylinder head of the intercooled engine was not designed to run without the intercooler and that damage WOULD occur. Hope this helps some.

hey Jones:

did you check to see if it has fuel in the tank? i know it's a minor thing, but i ran mine out of fuel once and it did the same thing. also, your injector pump might be out-of-balance... causing a stumble... check fuel system first. . then internal components... :(

Sounds like a stuck injector.

Crack the line to the hole that misses and to a different one. If the one to the cyl that misses shoots wildly, your injector is stuck open or the tip broke off.

Could also be blown head gasket, BUT that would involve 2 cylinders, not one.

Hey all,

Tried your suggestions and it keeps coming back to cracked or chipped exhaust valve. The one bad hole doesn't seem to care whether it's getting fuel or not. Thinking that with 416K+ miles on it I'd feel honor-bound to go completely through it rather than just band-aiding the problem, I opted to just repower it with a later 12 valve w/ intercooler. Old engine is ready to pull and I should be back on the road by the week-end. Walking sure gives a guy the incentive to fix his rig!

Thanks again for all the good tips and support. Jones
