I'm close to taking my engine out and I'm trying to take it out with the transmission. So do you guys have some tips for me, its looking really tight! Do I have to take my head off?

I pulled the engine on a 98 12v auto 4x4 a couple of years ago. At the time I posted a break down on the job, a search on my name might yeild a little useful info.

I did seperate the auto transmission from the engine, pulling the engine only. It was a pretty straight forward job, just a lot of work.

A few searches will yield a lot of helpful info.

Good luck,

RJR

ps, just re-read your post, and no, you don't remove the head. I did fab up a lift bar that hooked into the lift tab on the left rear of the engine, it was adjustable which made getting the tilt just right to clear everything.

You do need to remove the entire front of the truck, including the intercooler and all ac components. No need to break any ac seals, loosing coolent and pressure, just bolts, swing out of the way and secure.

Last one i did was pull the head or drop the oil pan to get it out ( head hit before the oil pan cleared)... with the transmission still on it is next to impossible with the head and oil pan still on it... Not to mention it's a 4X4 your working on

lift the REAR of the truck up to help get the right angle, should come out. I just did this on a 99 dually/5spd. pan and head ON.
