OMG..... This thing is HUGE !!!!

I decided awhile back to try one, just got the word that the shop I ordered it from received it today. Mines the WIX version.

I know this has been beaten to death, but I have a few questions and 'am too lazy to search all the past BHAF threads...

1) Are you guys clamping the turbo hose directly to the BHAF or are you inserting a piece of PVC to aid in the seal ?

2) Has anyone tried this BHAF with the HX40 and if so, is a heat shield necessary ? I read the posts on the SS Mallory mount, it looks sweet but I would really like to try the filter before I shell out more clams for a filter I may not keep.

I plan on installing the beast when I change my oil again, in about one week. While I am very happy with the Scotty air system and the K+N filter, the K+N is due for a cleaning and I thought that this would be a good opportunity to give the BHAF a try. Any adivce from the BHAF pros is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance :) .

I have the WIX to

I put a 3" sch 40 coupling inbetween the BHAF and the hose from the turbo and then clamped it together. As far as the HX40 I can't tell ya but with the turbo on my truck it doesn't get so hot that it will melt anything but it's hot enough that you can't put your hand on the wire mesh that surounds the filter and hold it there. I have a SS heat sheild on mine now more to keep water from splashing when going through a creek crossing. :) So far I have about 5,000 miles on the filter and it looks as good as the day I put it on and it did lower my EGTs about 150 degrees. :D

Hope that helps

Big D

I clamped my black hose directly on it. No problem.

I still have the stock turbo, cant comment on the hx40.

It is big aint it? I closed my hood real slow the first few times. :D

I havent noticed a huge drop in EGT's but I aint making a lot of power either.

The power seems to come "on" in a lower RPM though.....

Scott,

I used a piece of PVC inside the filter intake and clamped the intake tube onto the filter. This gave it a real nice snug fit that I wasn't worried would come apart and not realize it. I liked the filter... . It will really cut down on turbo noise/whine though! I am now giving the AFE Mega-Cannon style filter a try (used the Mallory mount for install). The AFE sounds alot like the K&N filters, lots of turbo song. I haven't really been able to see any measurable difference between the two. The AFE is flows 820 cfm compared with the BHAF 687.

Let me know your opinion of the BHAF.

Doug

Thanks for the response, gentlemen !!! I'll post my findings here as soon I get it on and do some driving. I've had the K+N on for about one year and pretty much know what my egts. are without even looking at the pyro, if you know what I mean. Should be interesting to see how it compares to the Scotty system.

I still can't get over the size of this beast, guessing that it was designed for the big boys with the exterior air filter boxes ????

I'm so used to the whistle in the cab with the SAS, I might be lost without it. Silence of the Rams, LOL.

Thanks again for the suggestions

Doug, I'm still interested in that box you are considering, if you decide to give it a try.

Eric, what filter were you using before the BHAF ?

Scott W.

DEFINATELY put a piece of PVC inside the filter neck to stiffen it up. I didn't and it seemed like it was nice and tight. I pop my hood every time I fill up and one time I open it up and BINGO - the air filter was out of the intake (this after running it for about 6 months)! :--) Worst part was that I had driven down about 5 miles of dirt road :( . I have it out right now because it's still drift busting season but when it goes back in a month or so from now it will have a piece of PVC in there.

Thanks for the reply, Steve. I just your reply in another BHAF post and have decided to go the route of a PVC coupler for added insurance. Good info, keep it coming.

Here's mine.....

I was worried at first so I set it up with the minder in. Seems laughable now. It'll be a long time before it gets sucked down. I've had mine in since they were first talked about and no problems. Put a piece of rubber hose around your AC line. It sit on it and may cause damage rubbing though if not protected. I didn't use the PVC insert because of the clamp I used to make the 4" PVC pipe work with the minder.

Stock.

I didnt even think of replacing it until I did the injectors. I wasnt getting enough boost so I had to shorten the wastegate arm. Wow!! From 28 psi to 39 psi!!! The filter that was virtually new, was now 60+% used up!!:D

I didnt notice a HUGE drop, but then again I'm running over 100 HP less than you are.

Eric

1. Clamped it directly to the hose.

2. I'm using it with the HX40. I put it in last summer & realized a consistent 50 degree drop in EGT. Since then, I put in the heat shield. Will be interesting to test this summer the difference with the heat shield.

The other difference was spool up. The HX40 was obviously starved for air. It was definately a brow raiser. :) So much that I took it off & put the stock airbox back on & carefully re-ran the test. Really wakes up the low end of the HX40. Oo.

Good pic. Garrett !!! Thanks again for all of the useful info :) . Should be interesting to see if there is any performance gain compared to the K+N.

!

I have my BHAF sitting at cummins right now Im going to pick it up in the morning. I will give it a shot. I have the K&N re0880 right now so it will be interesting to compare. I dont want to lose the turbo whine though. And yes the ring is out!

Stock clamp

Charles, slide a short piece of PVC or metal pipe into the outlet flange of the BHAF to act as a stiffener, then work the turbo inlet tube over the BHAF flange and tighten the stock clamp. I'd check it after a couple of days.

Well I went to Cummins today and pick mine up. I told the guy I am putting this in my Dodge and he thought I was jokeing. I said I am and it fits! So I put it in and drive around the block. I will say this, my turbo whine is alot quieter compared to the K&N reo880 :( but I will try this one out for awhile and see if I like it better. I sure does look impresive under the hood thoughOo.

I have got the wix bhaf with no stiffener/pvc pipe or anything. Just been clamped to the hose. So far so good, I really don't see how that thing could ever come loose. It is already very stiff. I guess that the fleetgaurd bhaf is a pos maybe? Is that what ya all that use the pipe have?

I got the fleetguard BHAF on Wed. ($37. 12 out the door:) :) :) ) but have not put it on yet. Am waiting for the Mallory Mount to arrive. Oo. Oo. Oo. I do not see how the hose could come off it so am going to try with no stiffener/pvc pipe or anything else first.

Sky, what's the Cummins part number; I'm back in the UK at the end of this month and may get around to an airfilter upgrade, which has been on my list of things to do for ages... ... .
