TDR MEMBER
Folks,

The TDR membership lost a fine fellow on Sunday 1/25/04. Jon Lord (jlord) died on the Russel Fork in Eastern KY in a kayaking accident. Jon was the owner of a sweet '03 2500 HO and had been a member for about a year.

I had known Jon about ten years and of the 30 or so people I paddle with regurlarly he was one of the two or three I would call a legitimate expert. He had paddled Class V streams all over the East for as long as I had known him and was a Russel Fork veteran with well over 200 career runs on this section. He was victim to a vertical pin in his boat at a drop called Towers. The force of the river pushed his head below the surface of the water. The two friends he was boating with were unable to free him as his position in the middle of the river at a big drop made him unaccessable to rescuers. As of today, his body has not been recovered.

He is survived by his parents, sister, wife and two young children.

No details about services etc. I'm assuming the family is giving the search as much time as possible. I've just moved to Colorado so I'm a little detached and am relying on communications with friends who are participating in the search. More details about the accident and reports on the search attempt can be found in the general forums onboatertalk.

He will be greatly missed in the whitewater community. He was as good at camping, beer drinking, and B. S. ing as he was at paddling difficult streams. Whitewater fatalities rarely involve beginners on easy streams; unfortunately, this is fairly typical for the sport.
