noise

I drove a Ford power stroke drw at work. And believe me that thing is noise all the time! Even with the take off noise on my Dodge. It makes the Dodge sound quite. Even at 70 I can hear the ford, at that speed with my truck I don't even notice it. As far as I see on the open road is where you need to be concerned about the noise level.

Before I bought my 2003, I drove several. I chose the one with the loudest engine (and the options I wanted), and the take-off "noise problem" described in this post. At least it sounds like a real diesel for a short time!

i noticed two days ago, now that i have 325 miles approx. that when the engine is at around 1700 and you hold it there, not accelerating or decelerating, it will sound more like a diesel. and yes it is more prominent when it is cold. personally i am glad that it is starting to sound more like a true diesel. it's about time my neighbors know what i bought !!!!:D

I just had a bad #1 injector in my 03 HO. It took two trips for the dealer to find it though. Do you also have a rather loud knock from about 900rpm to about 1700 rpm? Mine had a clatter like you are explaining but also had what I would call a knock.

If you are concerned about your truck and don't trust your Dodge dealer see if you can get one of the techs at a Cummins service center to at least give you there opinion.

What you are saying sounds normal to me but I am not hearing what you are hearing. I know that when I tow with mine it gets real loud at times so loud she says "slow down". It's hard to believe that just minutes later I will be going back down a grade in 5th gear and only hear road noise at that point.

THEY ALL RATTLE!

Every single one I've test drove at the dealers, and I know of 4 friends who have the 3rd gen trucks too and they all rattle for an instant under a slight throttle at low speeds... .

Anyone who says they don't has to be deaf!!

i am not saying anything is wrong with my truck. i think it is running perfectly. the sound is great. the mileage is great - 18. 6 overall since pickup. perfect idle and everything. started cold (30 deg) tonight after work and within 2 minutes the idle automatically went up to 1000 rpm :) the increased noise issue is not an issue for me, i just commented that i noticed it when it was cold. i am extremely satisfied overall with this baby. i am looking for excuses to go places. :p

some have complained about slow warmup, but mine is pushing heat out of the floor vents long before the gauge moves off 140.

considering how efficient diesels are, i can't complain.

all thumbs up here!!!

I'm not sure if it's what you guys are complaining about on your trucks, but while cruising at about 1800 rpm or 55-60 mph, mine purrrs just like my 12 valve did - not loud - just a nice purrr. I sometimes turn the radio off and just listen to the music that engine makes. Wish it sounded like that all the time!

Same thing here...

My 03 does the same thing. Took it to a dealer I trust based on a relationship from my '95, and he told me that it was a lugging issue at light throttle. I guess I'll just go with this until somebody here shines a light on it!

Noise

I have found that mine gets quieter after adding some fuel conditioner. I use Redline diesel fuel additive. Not sure if its the cleaning effect or increasing the cetane rating by the additive, but it definitely makes a difference. Not concerned about it as it is more a fuel quality issue than anything else.

Put a 24-valve (VP-44 vintage ISB... ) head on it, get some custom injection lines... . a new gear case/cover, high-pressure electric lift pump, and a P-7100.

A 12-valve head would be easier/cheaper... but you'd have to swap out your pistons as the 12-valve injector is offset just a tad compared to the ISB, ISBe... .

Will that be enough noise for 'ya?

I totally agree with you sstanley.

Now here's an opportunity for someone to make some nice recordings of their 12 valve truck going down the road. Then you could just pop it in your CD player and... . walla!... you're listening to a real diesel!

A guy could make a fortune selling these recordings. I bet he'd even sell 2 or 3!!!

It never seems to be doing it when I get it to the dealer. (Go Figure)!!!!!!

It seems to have cleared up since it has warmed up and it seems that we are not getting winter blend any more here in Oklahoma. Maybe it was just lower cetane levels when they mix the #1 with the #2 for better winter use. I never tried any cetane booster because I wanted to have the dealer here it.

Does anyone have a good idea about good or bad brands of diesel???????
