Hi everyone,

I sold my 01 2500 to my friend and now have a lightly used, new to me 3500 4x4 2006 DRW . I want to put the BHAF in it if possible and have looked high and low for what needs to be done on the 06 to make this happen and I have not found much. Can it be done? If so what about the sensor that is near the current air box ? what is done with it ?

Thanks in advance!

Jeff

yes

I had an '05 I was going to do the same thing to as you are wanting to do to yours. You will need some sort of hose/ intake plenum. Do a search on here for BHAF install and you will see it does take some doing but it can be done. I still have a new BHAF and spectre intake plenum. Not sure if I can do this to my new truck or not. You also might want to do the '03 to '08 steering upgrade. I have all these parts just never got around to putting them on my 05 due to the fact I traded it in. If you are interested in them PM me and we can go from there.

So are these part available from a vendor? what is the piece on top of the filter? Is that the same BHAF as i would have in my 01 truck?

A BHAF on a 3rd gen is a step in the wrong direction. The stock setup is good for 450 rwhp, and will provide cooler air than a BHAF.

Yep, AH19037 or comparable and a Spectre intake plenum. The 3rd gen has the advantage as the filter is out front and away from the major heat sources.

AH64ID,

I understand your statement, but is it not better for a diesel to breath easier? I never have like the stock filter on the DCT. I had the BHAF on my 01' and it ran better and had better oil sample results..... Sooo with that being said is there still no need to change to the BHAF on my 06? I see the sensor controls some of the idle functions as well as the grid heaters?

The stock filter on the 3rd gen's has been proven to flow and filter better than any stock replacement, and at filter vs flow its better than any of the CAI's I have seen. Not to mention its pretty good at sucking in cold air, with the 3 mods listed below I see 6-12* above ambient in the intake maniflod. Bone stock I saw 10-15* above ambient. . those are cruise temps. I don't see how hot enigne bay air wouldn't make it's way into the BHAF and increase the air temps.

1) A Home Depot CAI will bring more ambient air into the stock box when boosting hard, this will redice the IAT's and reduce the restriction allowing more, smoother flow.

2) A Airaid MIT will remove the intake baffles from the tube between the filter and the turbo. This mod direct air into the lower elbow and promotes smooth airflow. This will increase low boost throttle responce, and increase turbo spool. It also makes the turbo a little louder, but still passes the wife test. The best part about the MIT on your 06 is that it leaves the OEM lower elbow in place. The lower elbow has directional vanes that smooth the air as it makes the final 90* turn into the turbo. Holset claims this makes the turbo up to 30% more efficient. There is no aftermarket CAI I know of that does this, right off the bat you have lost performance there with a CAI. This is a low-mid range rpm mod.

3) The OEM intake horn is very restricive. It was built with ease of assembly in mind, not performance. A GDP Horn is the best bang for the buck on the intake horns, and it will hold a MK2+ filter kit if you want one. But the intake horn will decrease low end smoke (if you run a tuner), increase throttle responce, and increase turbo spool. I also saw 2-3* lower IAT's with the horn than pre-horn. This is a low-mid range rpm mod.

As for air filters, the OEM is the best on the market now. Be sure it has the OEM 4" pleat version.

As for the sensor it reads intake air temp and ambient pressure. The pressure is used to determine boost, and will be about the same in the inlet tube or in the enigne bay. The temp is the only way the ECM see's ambient temp, and thats colder than what's in the intake tube, so you may not get the fast idle when it otherwise would occur.

A lot of the pieces discussed are theoretically true and even make good sense when examined. However, proving them is a lot harder.

Yes, the stock filter is as god as it gets in the box. No, its not as good a filter for flow as there is out there. The stock filter in a modified box, at least up to at least 450 HP is not a restriction. Key here is a modified box because it is restrive without mods.

Either a large diameter tube to outside air, or, simpler just 5-6 holes drilled in the bottom of the box. I can find no definitve proof one is better than the other. My experience has been at road speeds hot air is not an issue, and, even at low speeds its not a factor because boost is so low and the CAC pretty efficient.

Pretty sure a BHAF and Outerwears filter will outlast 3 or 4 possibly more stock filters before it needs replaced. Moisture is the big problem in either case. Even the stock filter in the stock box with mods will get wet in heavy rainfall and its just as done as a BHAF.

I saw no difference in the vanes in the lower elbow in or out to levels I dynoed. Holesets claim not withstanding, its one of those things that is tough to prove consistently.

All a matter of what you want to believe and what you can prove to yourself as being valid. :)

So I guess since the filter is located at the front on my new to me truck it has a issue with getting wet... . is there a way to change the battery and filter around like on my 01 or is it just not worth the trouble?

I just wanted to try to do some of the same things that I had done on the 01 like the BHAF, ATS manifold and gauges... . which leads me to another question gauges??

I like the set up already but only want to tweek it a little...

thanks for the input I thought it would be as easy as the 01 but I am starting to think other wise.
