After some of the talk lately about torque tubes, usefullness, etc. , I decided to dissect my factory unit and see what I could do to it. I heard soooo many people say that they "cut" the guts out of the factory unit, I wanted to see what it was gonna take to do it.

I was certain that there was a way that the tube itself would come apart to be able to remove the insert instead of destroying it by trying to cut it out. Sure 'nuf, I saw the seam at one of the connection points. I took a small screwdriver and went around the seam to pry it apart. By prying it apart, you break a glued connection, but the lip on one end comes out and allows the guts inside to slide right out. What I did then was put a bead of high temp RTV around the sealing surface, drilled four holes and used sheet metal screws to insure that the connection lip didn't seperate from the main body. What you get is a factory lookin' tube with no guts and no cutting. :D

What you see in the pictures is the tube itself, the insert, and the white piece is what is in the bottom elbow that attaches to the turbo.

I wanted to try it to see what I thought of the new sound. The sound is AWESOME ! I love it. Others may not like it, but I wanna hear the turbo spool. The best part is - - it cost me ZERO, and I can always replace the insert if I choose to. I didn't destroy anything with what I did.

Whatcha think ?

I did something similiar to that on mine, but my buddy has a machine shop and we used a lathe to cut the big shoulder that holds the baffle in. So I don't have that lip there, it's just a straight through tube.

What is the white plastic 90 degree elbow with the fins for. Do you need this. I used a piece of 5 inch exhaust and had the ends flared out to fit snug into the rubber hose. I removed the white plastic elbow or should I put it back in. Then I wrapped the tube in Dynamat extreme with 3 layers to keep exhaust heat away from the air inside of the tube.

A buddy of mine did that to my pipe when I was at his garge doing the front spring replacement. I had it off the truck and was working when I heard him pop it apart with a hammer and screwdriver. At first it freaked me out when I realized what he was doing, but once I saw how easy it came apart, we gutted it and put it back on. The guts are still sitting on the shelf in my office. ;)

Why are we doing this - just for nicer turbo sound? Or is there a decrease in EGTs or anything? Is this the equivalent of removing the old silencer ring on the 2nd gens? I did that and enjoyed th the turbo whistle until I put the banks kit on and it sounded like a dog whistle! I liked it but the wife couldn't stand it for more than a few minutes... you guess what happened next...

I did this a while back. The turbo is a little louder from it, but not much. I removed the sliencer ring which made it quite a bit louder. it's my understanding that the torque tube is much louder than this mod and provides additional cfm and some small egt reductions.

I hate to sound like the party pooper, but isn't is reasonable to assume that these items were engineered to be in there for a reason? I mean I'm all in favor of removing restrictions, but these pieces seem to appear to help direct the flow of air into the turbo - perhaps to even increase the flow rate/efficiency. (Kind of like that product that is being sold on this site - help, forgot the name). I don't see DC putting in the extra money for these parts if they didn't do something - of course I have been known to be wrong on occassion! (just ask my wife)

The AirAid kit I installed on my truck had a tube that replaced that thing. I have the old part in the AirAid box in case I need to put it back on some day.

RonsRig... how do you like the AirAid? I have been thinking about getting one for my '03. The Dodge dealer here said if I bought it from him and let them install it, it would not affect my warranty at all. Do you think it was worth it?

Thanks..... Steve

I like it because the filtering suface is more that 50% larger than the stock filter. The filter is huge. I took it off to clean it before I put the pre-filter on and the inside of the intake tube was absolutely clean. I put the pre-filter on to keep the bees and other critters and foriegn object out of the pleats. The air dam that replaces the air box seals better than I expected. I can see the pattern of the gasket on the hood insulation and all parts of it makes contact. I don't know if it made a performance difference because I rarely push the truck. It has more power that anything else I have owned.

I am slowly bombing the truck. My next acquisition will be a Donaldson M085171 muffler. It is not the same as what the others have been using, 40" vs 51". I just wanted something that would fit nicely into where the stock muffler is. Also the flow rate is about 50% better than the 51" muffler. Carquest on 51st Ave just got a bunch of Donaldson mufflers in, but they haven't put them out to sell yet. Maybe by next week. I have been talking to Larry over there.

After that I will probably get a Bank's Six Gun, maybe with a Speed loader. Then an FASS... Oo.

Can't see pics

I am looking at this post, and can't see pics. I saw them yesterday and wanted to get another look. All I see is

STOP LIMIT EXCEEDED

What the heck is that?
