A couple of years ago, I wrecked my 2005 Dodge 2500 Turbodiesel (signature at bottom). The truck itself is pretty well totaled, but I would like to take the engine and transmission out of it and reuse it in a 1994 single cab. As you can see from my signature I put a few dollars into my 2005 engine and transmission.
I have a mechanic friend (who used to own a shop and probably will own another in future) who says that he will take my 2005 engine and transmission and put it in the 1994. The two main details he said are the vacuum pump that’s needed for the older truck AC and defroster controls, and the fact that the 2005 doesn’t have a mechanical throttle, but he has a fix for that too (I think he’ll use some combination of stock parts but I don’t recall the exact planning for that). He said he’ll do it for $2000 and I’ll give him the engine and transmission in my 1994. The 1994 has 191,000 miles on it, and runs well, the engine is absolutely clean, it looks as clean as my 2005, and obviously has been treated well (as has the whole car, it rivals my ‘old’ 2005 in being new looking, interior etc. I’m wondering if I may be paying too much to have this done-what is the good running 1994 engine w/automatic transmission worth? I don’t think it’s ever had any high performance work done to it.
The alternative would be to improve the 1994 engine’s performance with the usual add ons-either a good single turbo or maybe the BD two turbo set and p7100 throttle plate and transmission improvements to handle the power, in short to make the 1994 similar in power to the 2005 engine.
I know that the p7100 has plenty of fuel availiable-it's other things that it needs to run strong. At what point would I have to take precautions against a blown head gasket, for instance?
Any advice would be welcome. m
