Folks,
Trans is acting up again. 39k miles. Been running a couple thousand miles without problem until today. Shifting thru the selector and no movement or unusual sounds. Place in park, shift to 4wd low then into gear and movement. Back to park and out of 4wd and again no movement. Again into 4wd and movement. After this non-sense for a few minutes seems ok in 2wd. This is not the first time for similar symptoms. Any ideas?
Thanks,
John

Sounds like a transfer case problem (ending up in Neutral when it shouldn't be) rather than a transmission problem.

My mistake, should be while shifting to 4wd high.

Why would the transfer case be the culprit when I can run thousands of miles without a problem and not using 4wd?

First time total selector into any gear and zero response.

Earlier symptoms were transfer case (?) noise and no movement. Again, put it in 4wd and it'll move.

Dodge dealer was no help. One of those "if it's not happening now"…

Not getting much help on TDR, come on guys, speak up!

Is it a manual or electric shift transfer case? Like was said before sounds like the transfer case is self shifting into "N" instead of 2WD

Yes, it's pretty easy to diagnose with a scan tool. Just read the trans output speed when it's in the "no drive" condition. If you have positive output speed (but no movement) then the problem is in the transfer case (or driveshaft, or axle).
