:( Here we go again... I'll set the mood. It was 100 degrees today in NY, I went to NJ to get fuel, I was on the highway at 80-85 MPH for about 15 minutes and when I got to the gas station, I walked around my truck and saw transmission fluid dripping steadily from the front of the transmission(TQ converter access?) I checked the fluid and it was good. I moved it 20 feet and It stopped doing it. I never noticed this before today. I have had 2 of my friend's say that they smelled burnt fluid, but i never did. I have an AFE intake, MBRP exhaust, and Edge EZ on the secret setting. Truck has 42,000 miles on it, Oil changed every 3k, synthetic transmission fluid, put 31,000 miles in 11 months. I brought it to my oil change place and he said that he was almost positive that it was the rear main seal. what do you guys think???????????

Since it's transmission fluid that's leaking then the rear main seal on the engine is not in question. Your oil change guy should know better than that ;)

I had a similar trans leak on my '93 which turned out to be the pump shaft seal on the torque convertor.

I would not worry about it if it stopped leaking. The Transmission probobly just got a little hot and the fluid just ran out of the vent tube. Just keep a eye on the fluid level.

First off.

If your Oil change guy can't tell the diffrence between engine oil and transmission fluid I would fine a new Oil changer.

What color is your fluid ?

Dose it smell burnt ?

Wait a minuet here... . The trany just got a little hot and fluid ran out of the vent tube..... what a crock of crap!

You would not worry about it, yell right. The guy is not pulling a trailer nor does he have a load, and the trany got hot and spit out some fluid form the VENT tube, get real. . What the hell is everyone else that does pull a trailer suppose to do?? Do you real think they would find it acceptable, if they spit trany fluid all over the road because the transmission got hot????

Get out of here. . If your transmission spit fluid, there is a reason for it. Leaks do not seal themselves for your convenience. Also the poster before was correct, the rear main is in reference to the rear of the block, as in a seal that fits over the crankshaft at the rear of the engine where it exits the block and joins the flywheel, to keeps the oil from leaking out of the engine. if you have a leak in that area, it is most likely the seal at the front of the transmission were the pump is located. Also, it is VERY important that you know how to check you transmission fluid correctly. This procedure is outlined in your owners manual, or in most good truck manuals, like Haynes. Second, if your trucks trany was so hot that it pushed fluid out at this spot, then there was no accurate way you could have checked the fluid at that time. Something has to give. You should check your trucks transmission fluid level when it is cold, and while it is parked on LEVEL ground, following the steps as described in the manual. if in doubt, take it to a professional (not the local grease monkey at the quickie lube) he will help you out. I suspect your transmission was overfilled, hopefully it did not hurt anything. Good luck.

Thanks for the responses. 1. the transmission fluid was pink and did not smell burnt. 2.

I can only see that the fluid looked like it was coming from where the engine and trans hook up. 3. I was empty, and it never happened under load. 4. Why would it only happen now? 5. If my oil change guy is wrong, maybe he is having an off day, he is a good friend of the family and i get my oil changed there every month. I hope he is wrong. 6. I always thought that you check the trans fluid hot and at idle. What should i do?

I was not saying a leak would fix itself. If the trans was slightly overfilled and got hot the fluid will come out the vent tube. Do you agree? When I said he should not worry about it, what I ment was he should not panic and have the transmission pulled out and re-sealed for no reason.
