My 96 is makeing a lot of noise from what sounds like the trany. or the transfer case. The auto trany and transfer case has 211000 stock miles. Service has been done regular. The noise sounds like a bearing. I can hear it in all gears, but its the loudest in 3rd. The noise goes away when i put it in neutral, (at any speed). It doesnt make any dif under a load or coasting. I lifted the back of the truck and got under it to listen. I used a bar to hold to my ear and tryed to pinpoint where the noise is comeing from. Seems like the trany makes a little more noise than the case, but I dont want to go have a trany put in and then find out its the case! Im working on the road, so im not at my home where all my tools are. Ill have to have all the work done for me. Any one with an idea on how to figure which one is going bad, would surely help.

If everything appears to be working except for the noise, you may have a cracked flex plate. If that is the case, you don't want it to break completely becuse that will take out the pump in the transmission.

The trany works fine,no shift problems, nothing seems to be wrong, just this noise. Can I inspect the flex plate with out too much trouble?

I don't think you can see up in there very well. At least pull the little pan off the bottom of the bell houseing and see if you have any loose metal chips. You may be able to see up in there with a flash light, but if there are some cracks in the plate you may not be able to see them. I had that happen to mine about a year after I bought it new and that was the symptom. A lot of noise while it seemed to be working ok. I tried to get home with it but the thing broke free. That wrecked the transmission pump because the torque converter flopped around.
