i had my tune-up with the cummins specialist. a couple of his comments were:

make absolutely sure the 2 solenoids under the port battery are good and tight. they control the intake air heater.

the injector pump solenoid almost never goes bad ($450). it is almost always the relay (on the firewall -buy seimens - cheaper) that controls it. engine won't start or hard to start are some of the symptoms.

unless there is frost on the window. no need to wait on the manifold heater.

if you want a quick start and ease on your starter, then give just a crack of pedal and turn the key. my engine starts with < 1 crank. i. e. BANG!

in extremely cold weather, give the heater 2 cycles and 1/2 pedal.

the proper timing for my truck is at 15. 5deg. the injector timing gear was never put on correctly at cummins because they would not remove the grease on the shaft place there by bosch. thus the gear was slipped. so he loosened the gear, set bdc, then put the gear back with 144ft-lbs.

don't waste your time having a dealer time your truck unless he does it that way.

use cummins premium blue oil only if that is the only oil that has been in the rig, otherwise use rotella t 15w40.

change your oil <5000miles. turbo should last 800,000mi.

be careful changing the fuel filter (before winter and every 12,000mi)- high risk for contamination and damage to the injector pump ($5900 retail). i. e. be anal.

valve adjustment every 200,000mi.

change coolant every 2 yrs.

oil should look coming out the way it went in if you change it every 3-4000mi.

my truck runs like a dream - he made right the recall 970 fubar'd by the dealer. tps voltgages all screwed up. dealer lied. linkage bent by the dealer. linkgage must also be adjusted for the 1st gear. can't be too short or too long. dealer was installing a brake switch when they had no clue as to why my trruck was surging. $140 down the tubes.

good luck. scott.

Scott sounds good, glad you got your problems worked out, had a feeling your tps just needed adjustment. Only thing I don't agree with is valve adjustment every 200,000 miles, he's talking about a 24 valve, 12 needs it about every 50k. Not so sure about the premium blue/rotella thing either.

one more thing... ... .

dowel pin.....

of the his last 178 candidate trucks for the dowel pin... . 175 had the pin out from 50%-100%. . yes. i saw several destroyed housings hanging on the wall. the last was from this am. the pin fell out as the customer was coming up his drive!! what a lucky *******. he has a fix. a bolt loctited in with an oblong washer that fits over the pin from the inside of the housing. he des it for $150. that includes a new seal. takes 1. 5hours to complete. a man came in this week for his dowel pin job and his was literally hanging out (pin!). a magnet on the end of the telescope pulled it out! scared the **** out of me. mine will be fixed next tues.

good luck.

Glad to hear all worked out for you Scott. Just curious what were you actual TPS voltages?

I'm not doubting anybody here, but to make the turbo last 800,000 miles you really really need to let it cool, especially after a hard run (ie. pulling the boat). This issue of cool down is stated in your owners manual and is recommended by Cummins.

When you say be careful about changing the fuel filter, do you mean to make sure to include changing it at regular service intervals, or is there something I've been missing in all the times I have done it before?

I agree the 200k seems a bit much. Perhaps 200k might be acceptable after the initial valve adjustment.

Also the oil thing has been beaten to death around here. Rotella and PB are good oils, but there are certainly many better. Maybe his point was there is no need to run synthetics to get a long useful life out of the Cummins.

cooker,

my voltages were . 765 and 3. 4.

he wrote the 970 recall and said the voltages are suppose to be 1. 0 +/- . 01 not +/- . 2 !!!!!!!!! wow.

he said this engine has ZERO tolerance to contaminated fuel and overheating. he just meant that when you get that new fuel filter out to put it on put a clean rag over it until it is ready to mate to the housing. and when you change it pour out the fuel into a jar and find out what's at the bottom. i saw some nasty jars sitting in there! change it every 12000.

his turbo comments were that the 5000 mi oil change line seemed to be the life of the turbo. i. e. those that were changed < 5k lasted MUCH longer. those turbos like very clean oil.

good luck. scott.

thanks for all of the input.

if he was in michigan - i would make an appointment if i wanted to keep my truck for awhile!!

he services trucks from 49 states. my tune up $250..... new injectors and wastegate supply pressure orifice (59psi) and injector pump cam adjustment - $500.

many customers fed up with the incompetent dealers.

Who/Where is he?

Scott, I cant find any good shops that know their stuff south of Orlando! My local Cummins shop wont time a motor out of 'spec'... and claims 15-16 degrees will melt pistons! LOL Tell us Floridians more about this shop you've found!

Rotella?????????

Man I thought Rotella was only ment to run in stuff like my wifes Honda... ... ... ... ... ... . HAHAHAHAHAHA Sorry guys don't have time for Rotella or that lack of oil they call oil T-D
